Chic Sneakers: Time to Ditch the Heels?

John B. Marine | 11:54 PM | | | |
Sneakers are primarily casual. However, some sneakers are actually stylish enough to go with casual outfits, preppy outfits, even semi-formal outfits, and even night out outfits. This blog post focuses on such sneakers and some associated outfits. Chic high-heel shoes will never go out of style. Some fashionistas wear sneakers primarily for casual wear or to even play down truly chic or formal outfits. However, could it be that chic sneakers may actually be BETTER than even the most foxy high-heel footwear? Could sneakers actually REPLACE your finest heeled footwear to wear with your most dressy outfits? I will investigate with this blog post.

I originally posted a topic on chic sneakers in my "John's Blog Space" blog back in 2010. I thought I posted this topic on "StyleSpace by JBM," but apparently not. Let me revisit this topic here in 2019 in my fashion/beauty blog.

Chic Sneakers

Sneakers are the perfect shoes to dress down fancy outfits. While that may be true, some dare to pair sneakers with certain dressy, classy, or night-out fashions. Any outfit can be made or broken (in my view) based on footwear choice. The wrong shoes can ruin any outfit. Some people even feel picking the wrong shoes can be a right decision- even including sneakers. A certain style of sneakers can either make an unlikely outfit better or worse.

A pair of sneakers usually suggest casual appeal. Rather than trying to be all dolled up in a sense, you are instead wearing shoes suggesting you are either a casual person or want to be sporty. Sneakers present an unprofessional mindset being expressed. The only times usually when sneakers are worn are mostly for Casual Friday at the office. That, or in certain environments where it is okay to wear sneakers as part of your work uniform or school uniform. However, styled right, and with the right kind of sneakers, some outfits can actually be great to pair with sneakers. Or they may provide some insight that such an unexpected footwear combination can actually work with a certain outfit.

In recent times, fashionistas have dared pair some of the cutest, classiest, and even sexiest outfits with sneakers. Sneakers have come to the point where they can be as stylish as even the most lustful pair of heeled footwear. Certain sneakers are becoming worthy and stylish alternatives to certain heeled footwear. To provide an example, a young female heading out to the nightclub could possibly pair a sexy or silky mini dress with a pair of chic sneakers rather than wear some sexy pumps or sexy sandals. Are sneakers better with flirty or sexy outfits? No way (to me). Some outfits are better paired with chic shoes as opposed to sneakers. However, that won't stop some fashionistas from daring try to pair sneakers with some classy or hot outfits. Some sneakers go well with certain kinds of outfits; a lot of others do not.

Some designers of chic style sneakers include the likes of Balenciaga, Superga, Ash, Isabel Marant, and others. Some other footwear designers wear sneakers that would be fairly okay to go with non-casual outfits like Robert Clergerie. A certain number of designers can design sneakers that actually can go very well with outfits more classy than they. Various chic sneakers, especially of high-end and luxury designers can really go fairly nicely with such outfits. Keep in mind that we will not be discussing the likes of (for example) Converses or Vans being paired with various chic/formal/sexy outfits. Instead, it's about various outfit and sneaker pairings that actually work.

Chic Sneakers: Time to Ditch the Heels?

We all know nothing makes a female feel confident and appealing than wearing some high heel footwear. That confidence is boosted with clothing that emphasizes one's appeal ranging from classy, elegant, to even sexy. You match chic appeal with chic appeal by pairing outfits such as a mini dress with some feminine high heels for exquisite looks. However, can sneakers overtake heels as far as chic and sexy outfits are concerned? Could we possibly see more flirty and sexy mini dresses/skirts paired with any number of sneakers instead of any kind of high heels?

Some believe pairing the same classy, elegant, and/or sexy outfits are NOT hurt by wearing sneakers. In fact, some even want to wear evening-type outfits in the daytime with sneakers. Some fashionistas do not seem to want sneakers to only be comfortable shoes to transition with after a long time in more classy or chic footwear. There are cases where it seems certain sneakers are being made to be as much of versatile shoes as some versatile outfits. When I came up with my blog post regarding dresses paired with sneakers, it was Kendall Jenner wearing a pair of Adidas sneakers to go with a cute and hot polka dot mini dress. This means almost any fashionista could possibly look equally hot if wearing certain chic outfits that would look better in almost any sort of footwear besides sneakers- even flip-flop/thong sandals. Even sheepskin boots. Even rubber clogs. Maybe even sporty slide sandals.

Only a certain few styles of sneakers can actually be good- and even a bit unexpected- paired with certain chic outfits. If some fashionistas wanted to, they wish they'd look just as stylish in some Converses or Vans as they would be in chic high-heel footwear. This is almost as much as some females wished they could wear flip-flop/thong sandals with every outfit. Some outfits just don't go together with sneakers no matter how hard one tries to make them work with some outfits. I would rather (for example) see the traditional red high-heels be paired with a hot outfit rather than some fashion or active sneakers be paired with some hot outfit. Also, I doubt we'll be seeing fashionistas who'll talk about how sexy their sneakers are, as opposed to any elegant pair of high-heel footwear.

Chic Sneakers: Time to Ditch the Heels? Keds Thinks You Should!

"Dare to be different. Dare to dance the night away. Dare to ditch the heels."

-ad campaign for Keds x Kate Spade New York

Some shoe designer SHOULD want you to ditch your heels! That designer is Keds. A collaboration of Kate Spade New York and Keds has led to comfortable sneakers that are as chic and as unique as a lot of your favorite dressy footwear. Most of all, this collection assures you can still enjoy your formal or dressy outfits without having to wear such uncomfortable chic shoes for extended periods of time.

I want to make a blog post regarding this collection in the future. But for now, if you want to learn more about this sneaker collection, please visit Keds x Kate Spade New York collection at Keds.com.

Chic Sneakers: Some Examples...

The emphasis on this blog post is on chic, fashion sneakers. I need to clarify this as best as I can. So that is what this section is for. I want you to envision something before you go any further. Take either your favorite classy, chic, formal, or even sexy outfits; and instead of a chic pair of pumps or sandals (or even boots), replace the footwear with sneakers. Would your outfit(s) still look great trading heels for sneakers? That said, let me share some sneakers with you.

Chic Sneakers: Sneaker Examples.

As long as you have an eye for style, certain sneakers look stylish enough to compliment outfits rather than completely ruin them. The wrong pair of shoes can ruin any outfit or even throw off the balance of an outfit. By no means are the sneakers I have pictured in this section are perfect to go with outfits. They are, however, some sneakers that shouldn't hurt even classy, formal, or even sexy outfits. So take a look a few sneakers I think will NOT ruin a lot of non-casual or non-sporty outfits:

Chic Sneakers: Picture Examples.

These are some sneakers that could nicely compliment, or at least be unexpected with chic, classy, even formal, or even night-out/sexy type feminine fashions. Take a look:

Robert Clergerie sneakers
^ from: www.kristimishell.com - These sneakers are styled in such a way that they could be footwear to compliment at least semi-formal outfits and some other dressy outfits.

Chanel transparent sneakers
^ from: hardlyeverwornit.com - As worn once by Kylie Jenner with a silk mini dress, these Chanel transparent sneakers offer sportiness and style in one package.

Cape Robbin metallic leatherette jogger sneakers
^ from: (Amazon) - These are a chic take on some sporty sneakers. Note the quilted, kind of studded detail of these sporty sneakers. The low, sporty profile can make these sneakers a rather unexpected pair of sneakers to go with dressy outfits.

metallic quilted slip-on sneakers
^ from: zulily.com - Laces a problem? No worries- go slip-on! Go laceless!

glitter sneakers
^ from: www.shoestale.com - Try a pair of glitter sneakers to glam up your casual wardrobe! Girly sneakers like these could even compliment some of your more dressy outfits.

Keds Kate Spade glitter sneakers
^ from: keds.com - Meant to be worn as alternative shoes for formal outfits (mostly wedding brides), glitter sneakers like these offer comfort after being around in formal high-heels.

Superga platform sneakers
^ from: (Amazon) - These platform sneakers may be casual, but their style suggests they could also go with dressy outfits.

shiny metallic sneakers
^ from: softsurroundings.com - These metallic sneakers could possibly be worn with your dressy outfits without ruining a dressy outfit.

Keds leather glitter sneakers
^ from: keds.com - The glitter detail at the back and the metallic shoelace detail make these a rather dressy pair of sneakers.

Fenty PUMA bow sneakers
^ from: stylenb.com - These bow sneakers combine sporty and girly in one package. Their profile nearly suggests athleisure, though they could easily make dressy outfits a bit more cute. Would you dare pairing these sneakers with your most dressy outfits?

Keds bow sneakers
^ from: www.keds.com - These bow sneakers combine sporty and girly in one package. Would you dare pairing these sneakers with your most dressy outfits?

Spree Picky bow sneakers
^ from: spreepicky.com - These sneakers entirely replace shoe laces with a ribbon-type set of shoe laces. These may seem like childish shoes, but they are of women's size. These sneakers can make you cutely casual with even your dressiest outfits!

These sneakers are only a few examples of what can be possible trying to pair sneakers with even the most chic outfits. I mostly looked at white-colored sneakers, but I'm sure a lot of these sneakers are also offered in other colors in case you are interested in them. It's still safe going with the basics rather than try anything outlandish or unusual. Do any of these sneakers seem like sneakers you could wear with chic or formal outfits of some kind? I'll leave the shopping around to you on this one.

Chic Sneakers: Outfit Examples

Elegant outfits meet sneakers. The end result? You decide. Here are examples of outfits I consider elegant, yet topped off with sneakers as the footwear of choice. You decide whether or not these outfits could have been better with chic shoes, as opposed to sneakers:

"Power Pants" (The Professional Cinderella) « a somewhat elegant outfit of a blouse and palazzo pants but paired with platform sneakers.
"DOPASOWANA SUKIENKA MIDI NA LATO" (Kolorowa Dusza) « sheath dress with sneakers.
"PAILLETTES UN JOUR, PAILLETTES TOUJOURS !" (Marine Guillemette) « a sparkling mid-length dress with platform metallic sneakers.

For the record, I think the first link I posted was rather cute to pair with sneakers. The others I mentioned are your call on if sneakers were the right choice to complete those outfits.

Chic Sneakers: SHOULD You Ditch the Heels? (Final Thoughts)

It is your call. I would tell you to retain the heels and don't make any silly fashion decision of trying to look stylish. Fashion will teach you that you can make ANY outfit work as long as you have the proper pieces and know how to pull off certain outfits.

Having said all of this, I would advise against making sneakers your primary footwear for most classy, sexy, or formal outfits. There is a reason why we love heeled footwear. The main reason is because they emphasize style and exude confidence. You just don't get that appeal for your feet and your overall outfit with sneakers. Try as you might, it is going to take a lot to say that a certain pair of sneakers work better for some sexy/classy/formal outfits than even the most charming heeled footwear.

Sneakers provide one advantage that can not be debated- comfort. Wearing a pair of mostly hard chic shoes can feel unbearable, and so you need some sneakers to give your feet and heels some support after extended periods of walking. Sneakers provide this comfort. Only so few sneakers can actually be just as stylish with outfits to maintain a stylish balance. Most other sneakers would ruin even some of the finest outfits.

If you prefer lace-up shoes that do not ruin most outfits, consider oxford shoes or brogues. But once again- whether or not you should trade chic heel shoes for sneakers is your call. If you can pull off great looks with sneakers, even as unexpected shoes to complete outfits with, go for it. For me, I'd stick to the basics. Don't fix what isn't broken. Don't be too much a fashion rebel.

Chic Sneaker Influences.

Do you need some influence that sneakers can be just as chic with outfits as any heels? Here are some resources:

Those are my final thoughts regarding sneakers as chic shoes. If this topic generates enough interest, I may offer some shopping resources of sneakers hand-picked by me that I consider chic or dressy. Let me know if you're interested. If so, I will edit this post to include such sneakers you can shop for online.

This post actually took quite some time to develop, because I want to make sure my posts are of the best quality- even casual ones. So I am a bit sorry I didn't release this any sooner. I had been working on it for a few days or a few weeks. Still, it has been released, and I hope you enjoyed this post! Thank you for reading! Take care and be well.
