Dresses with sneakers is nothing new discussion-wise here on "StyleSpace by JBM." So I am discussing the look of slip dresses with sneakers. Does it work? Can you style it well? A slip dress is very elegant and loose. They are amazingly versatile not only as lingerie-style or lounge-style dresses, but also can surely be worn out of the house. They also can be dressed up or down. A fashionista could wear a slip dress for occasions ranging from running errands to date nights or formal occasions. While elegance is provided by the silky slip dress, ruining that elegance is simple- wearing sneakers or combat boots instead of some chic shoes. Though slip dresses can be made casual or can be dressed down, SHOULD they? That is for me to discuss in this blog post.
For this blog post, I am only focusing on slip dresses mostly with sneakers, though I did mention combat boots in the introduction.

Should slip dresses be paired with sneakers? Here begins my overview of this look...
^ from: (Abrafiltros) - Would you pair slip dresses with sneakers? Or have you? This famous model wears a slip maxi dress that has a high slit and paired with chunky sneakers.
The juxtaposition of slip dresses with sneakers lends itself to whether or not such a thing actually works. Should something elegant and silky like a slip dress ever be paired with something as not-elegant as sneakers? Dressy outfits paired with sneakers simply don't go together most of the time. That doesn't mean, however, that fashionistas still try to pair slip dresses with sneakers. Fashionistas prove you can be elegantly casual by trading chic shoes or sandals with slip dresses for sneakers. Some fashionistas even try to play down an elegant dress by pairing it with certain casual elements. The least of which, involves pairing a slip dress with denim jean jackets or even edgy jackets. Certain celebrities have made it hot to wear sneakers with a flirty or silky dress. Among those include Khloe Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, Emily Ratajkowski, and Rihanna among others.
On the other hand, can something that seems so wrong be right, eventually? Well, that may be the case. I must admit I have had a strange fondness for certain dresses paired with something sneakers. That is why I have had a recent interest in posting more about sneakers and outfits paired with sneakers. I sometimes look at outfits and think, "why did she pair this outfit with sneakers?" Elegance can not be maintained with sneakers or a jean jacket. I often feel the wrong shoes for an outfit send an absolutely wrong message. If dressed mostly for a highly formal outfit wearing a fancy dress or gown and then paired your outfit with sneakers, it suggests one of two things: either you're wearing more comfortable footwear after being in dressy shoes for so long, or you are trying to play down your elegance severely with a wrong choice of footwear. You can't always get away with such a fashion choice in most settings.
There are some cases where slip dresses with sneakers is a viable fashion alternative. In some cases, even, wearing a slip dress with sneakers is a way to look elegant while also keeping your feet comfortable from so much walking. This is especially true if you walk around cities like New York City or Paris. That too can explain why the slip dress with sneakers look is so revered for fashionistas. You may even be part of certain parties or occasions where it would be foolish to wear stiletto heels or certain sandals. A good example would be for outdoor parties that happen on grass or on sand. After all, you don't want your high heels to sink into the grass or sand.
Most fashion publications will tell you that it is perfectly okay to go with an elegant dress and pair it with sneakers as long as you do it right. To an extent, there is a unique charm (and even a little sexiness) to wearing a silky, elegant dress coupled with some aggressive sneakers. There is an appeal towards showing leg elegantly in an equally elegant dress. Perhaps we get drawn to the unexpectedly sexy appeal of showing leg in a silky dress while wearing some chunky sneakers. We all know a handful of high-end fashion designers, and even more mainstream brands, have made many sneakers to go with almost any outfit. Perhaps you have seen evening-style dresses worn with Nike sneakers or even Balenciaga sneakers. Surely I have seen a lot of these outfits as I was researching this topic. You might have even seen a few slip dresses paired with sneakers as pictures I used in my blog posts if you regularly visit "StyleSpace by JBM."
The next topic is about what works for slip dresses, sneakers, and other considerations. So move on to the next section for more on that.
Slip Dresses With Sneakers: What Works?
Pairing slip dresses with sneakers does not have to be a losing deal. The right kind of sneakers to compliment slip dresses can maintain some elegance. So what kind of sneakers would work to maintain the elegance of slip dresses? Get ready for a lot of different sneaker discussion points...
^ from: HowToWearFashion - There is a certain method to properly styling slip dresses with sneakers.
What Works: The Slip Dresses.
Slip dresses are silky and elegant. Most fashionistas associate slip dresses with lingerie or night out fashion. A mini slip dress can be very romantic. A mid-length/midi slip dress could be great enough to wear stylishly for nights out. Some mid-length dresses have slits to them for some extra appeal. The most appealing slip dresses are long ones. If you want to make a statement with a slip dress, get yourself a long slip dress that has one or more slits to them. It also pays to find a slip dress in a very nice color or even in some patterns if you so prefer. For top and back details, you can really make a statement with a slip dress that has a cowl neck or some sort of backless design. A slip dress with a plunging neckline would be romantic for a slip dress. However, with sneakers (explained later), a slip dress with a plunging neckline would have its elegance ruined.
Slip dresses that have ruching details and various ties have flirty and romantic elements to them. There are also slip dresses that have cutout details. These details could range from cutouts on the sides of the upper body or may even include a flash of midriff up front. If you have one of these slip dresses, I'd surely advise against sneakers with these because their elegant and romantic profile would be ruined with such slip dresses.
My focus this post long is about looking stylish in slip dresses while still retaining elegance in them.
What Works: The Sneakers.
I always say to avoid really casual shoes with something elegant as a slip dress. So I would advise against some Converses or checkered Vans with such dresses. I would also advise against certain real aggressive sneakers (such as some sneakers from brands like Dolls Kill or Demonia). I am NOT a fan of sock sneakers, so avoid those entirely. I am also not fond of basketball sneakers to go with such dresses, so avoid these entirely as well.Instead, it would seem best to go with some simple sneakers to go with a slip dress and sneakers look. I would go with some easy sneakers like some Keds Champion sneakers or the Superga Acotw platform sneakers. Some active-type sneakers will also work, as long as they aren't in loud colors or loud color combinations. I've seen slip dresses paired with sneakers from Nike, Adidas, New Balance, and more that didn't look bad with slip dresses. To me, avoid any early-1990s sneakers with three or four colors to them. It is best going with some solid white sneakers. Since we are discussing elegant dresses, metallic sneakers can also be considered.
Platform sneakers and chunky are not entirely off-limits and not entirely a no-no, though. I mentioned the Superga Acotw platform sneakers, for instance. Certain chunky sneakers (or as some call them, "dad sneakers") have also proven to be chic with most chic outfits. Many fashionistas have gone with the Fila Disruptor II sneakers. If you have money to burn, surely the most popular high-end sneakers are the Balenciaga Triple S sneakers with their wide base and chunky appearance.
A good pair of wedge sneakers can also go well with slip dresses. While I attacked most wedge sneakers, especially of the Isabel Marant variety, some wedge sneakers are decent enough to go with slip dresses while also maintaining some feminine charm. So don't overlook some wedge sandals. Just avoid Isabel Marant's wedge sneakers like The Plague!
What Works: Other Considerations.
Some of you may know I am not fond of leggings or tights. A lot of times, you may see some fashionistas wearing socks with sneakers. If you have any ankle socks or no-show socks, they look better than tall tube socks. I would avoid tall socks even for those doing athleisure outfits. I don't particularly care for leggings or tights, so I wouldn't want them paired with sneakers and a slip dress. If you have night-out style intentions, it would seem a mismatch to go with elegant earrings, an elegant necklace, and/or an elegant handbag of some kind while wearing a silk dress and sneakers. Don't go for these touches if you're pairing a slip dress with sneakers. Or at best... keep the evening accessory details minimal.
These are only a few (yeah, "a few...") ideas in regards to my thoughts on slip dresses with sneakers. Now to show that slip dresses with sneakers aren't a foreign concept...
Slip Dresses With Sneakers: Blogger Examples
Here are some examples of fashionistas wearing silky slip dresses with sneakers. Each post has at least one example in their post. I am not saying any of these are outfits I necessarily approve of. I am only providing these for educational purposes. I give a brief description to each:
• "Elegant Gold Dress" (Shiny Honey) « a golden slip dress paired with sneakers.
• "HOW TO WEAR YOUR SNEAKERS FROM DAY TO NIGHT" (NotJessFashion) « one outfit features one pair of sneakers worn in two different settings, especially one with a slip dress.
• "How to Style your Nike Cortez" (Bisous Natasha) « one outfit in this post features an elegant style dress paired with metallic sneakers.
• "Silk" (The Native Wolf) « a pale blue silk dress paired with white sneakers.
• "DRAMATIC MAXI DRESSES AND SNEAKERS (TWO WAYS)" (themomedit.com) « one outfit features a red floral silk dress paired with sneakers.
So if I was the one to debate "no" to slip dresses with sneakers, at least these fashionistas would disagree with me. Speaking of final thoughts...
Slip Dresses With Sneakers: Final Thoughts
Sneakers have evolved from being casual wear and active wear to mostly being chic shoes for any outfit. In the case of slip dresses, they have shown to be elegant and wearable to many a fashionista. Pairing slip dresses with sneakers is a risky proposition. The right style slip dresses will go very nicely with most sneakers. Some sneakers can actually be as elegant as some of the slip dresses they are paired with. As long as sneakers continue being as chic of footwear as most non-sneakers, fashionistas will still lovingly adorn their sneakers with their most silky and elegant slip dresses.
While I would prefer most slip dresses be paired with more chic shoes, chic sandals, and chic boots; slip dresses with sneakers work as long as you have lovely enough sneakers to pair with the most elegant of slip dresses. Unique sexiness can be achieved with certain sneakers paired with certain slip dresses. Everyone has different levels of style and different tastes in style. I just think it can be too easy ruining the elegance of a slip dress by wearing something like sneakers. But again- that's ME. You style yourself the way you want to style yourself. Agree to disagree if you so please. All I want to do is share my mind on slip dresses with sneakers.
