Pinafores are jumper dresses that are essentially suspender skirts. Many of them can be worn casually or even in a preppy sense. They can be adorably casual. You can either think of a pinafore as an overall/dungaree dress or a skirt with suspenders or straps. For the most part, pinafores are essentially dresses. A lot of pinafores are as functional as they are cute, since they have pockets to them. Pinafores usually hit somewhere between mid-thigh and the knees. However, there are also some maxi-length pinafores. Pinafores also are worn as school uniforms for girls.
While I never really was into overalls/dungarees, I tend to find pinafores cute. A lot of them would be too daring to wear on their own (and I don't recommend pinafores be worn without any top underneath). I would say some people would have the same reservation about pinafores much like rompers- mostly being for children to wear and not at all stylish for grown-ups. In fact, some feel pinafores are more like childish garments rather than something for adult (or at least adolescent) fashionistas. I do not consider pinafores to be sexy. They are more modest dresses that offer classy chic.
Styling Pinafores.
A pinafore can be styled with certain stylish tops and with certain shoes. Since these are so casual, I wouldn't try to go with any tops with statement elements or statement sleeves. A simple T-shirt will serve you well with a pinafore. If feeling chic, simple button-down shirts and some basic blouses will go well with a lot of pinafores. Consider wearing pinafores over sweaters if it's cold today/tonight.How about footwear? If casual is what you're after, you can surely go with your favorite pair of sneakers to pair with a pinafore. You can also go with a cute pair of ballet flats if you're feeling cute in a pinafore. Maybe you're the edgy type; in that case, you're probably thinking fishnet tights and/or combat boots. Your options are a bit more open if you have a more classy (non-denim jean) pinafore. For example, you could try to wear some chic sandals or a stylish pair of ankle boots. You may even go preppy by opting for some loafers, some oxford shoes, or some brogues. A pair of warm tights with tall boots will keep you warm on cool/cold days with a pinafore. Some leggings and some ballet flats under a pinafore are a cute combination if you fancy leggings under dresses.

Pinafores: Final Thoughts
Pinafore dresses are modest and stylish for just about any fashionista. They are the skirt/dress equivalent of overalls/dungarees. The only turn-off of pinafores is if you think (especially as an adolescent or adult) they look too childish. They can still be fun and cute for casual wear and even for some preppy outfits. So surely give pinafores a chance.
