Espadrilles

John B. Marine | 8:58 PM |
(UPDATED: May 18, 2023)

Espadrilles are casual cool style for warm weather times. Though usually worn by females, some males also wear some espadrilles. The espadrilles of this blog post are of the feminine variety. Previously on "StyleSpace by JBM," I discussed wrap espadrilles. Espadrilles, however, can take on multiple forms. Besides the wrap espadrilles with wedge heels, there are flat espadrilles, espadrille sandals, espadrille clogs and mules, and even espadrille sneakers.

Espadrilles

Let's talk espadrilles!

(NOTE: This paragraph has information derived from "The History of the Espadrille") The origins of espadrilles can be traced back to Spain to circa 2000 B.C. Espadrilles are woven from a plant called esparto. They have been worn early on mostly by peasants. In later years, military and miners wore espadrilles. In modern times, their popularity would grow starting in the 1940s and then into the 1970s. Today, they are a well-loved warm weather shoe by males and females.

To go with a handful of warm weather outfits, espadrilles are often worn by many a fashionable type. While the focus of this post is on feminine espadrilles, there are also males who wear some espadrilles. Espadrilles primarily are rugged and stylish without being rebellious. Many espadrilles are woven or have cork or straw bases. If going about in Europe, these are not a bad style of shoe to wear as you traverse around various places. Even if you are not vacationing, espadrilles can still offer a stylish touch to your daytime outfits. It is also possible a fashionista could attend a beach wedding and wear some espadrilles while there. Do not expect espadrilles to be ultra-chic or for ultra glamour. Instead, these are shoes that will serve you well with your casual outfits.

Now allow me to discuss different styles of espadrilles. I got a handful of examples to share with you. All of these pictures are provided for educational purposes.

Flat Espadrilles.

^ from: (Bloomingdales) - Flat, slip-on espadrilles are simple and comfortable. Some flat espadrilles are not covered all around and may have open toes.

Flat espadrilles are common espadrilles to wear. Both males and females wear these style espadrilles. The appeal to these is their slip-on design. They are comfortable shoes to wear for the casual set. Commonly, I would see fashionistas wear those Chanel espadrilles with the cap-toe design. Even if you don't fancy a pair of Chanel espadrilles, you can still do fine with the likes of some TOMS or BOBS by Skechers flat espadrilles.

Espadrille Clogs and Mules.

^ from: (Zappos) - Clogs and mules, already known for their slip-on comfort, also make for some comfortable espadrilles.

If you already love clogs and mules for their slip-on style, you can enjoy them more in espadrille form. The espadrille style lends such clogs and mules to be just as stylish as their non-espadrille form. These shoes would work very well for the Bohemian or festival fashionista.

Wrap Espadrilles.

wrap espadrilles
^ from: The Reformation - Wrap espadrilles can make for a charming outfit in warmer weather.

Wrap espadrilles are uniquely feminine and charming. Whether in the style of closed toes or open toes, these are some of the most charming casual shoes any fashionista can wear. These espadrilles go best with mid-length dresses/skirts or maxi dresses/skirts. However, you can also make them work with some short shorts or some cropped jeans, cropped pants, or cropped jumpsuits.

Wedge Espadrilles.

^ from: Amazon - Fully-enclosed wedge espadrilles are great casual shoes for fashionistas.

wedge espadrille open toe
^ from: Lyst - Peep/Open toe espadrilles offer a little open air comfort. Some peep-toe espadrilles have a slingback design.

If you are a fashionista looking to elevate your style game with a sweet wedge heel, you can do so in a pair of wedge espadrilles. Such espadrilles are for the stylish fashionista that wants to wear some comfortable high heels. Whether fully enclosed or with slingback designs or peep-toe designs, wedge espadrilles are where it's at to be chic while not being overly chic.

Espadrille Sandals.

^ from: (Amazon) - Enjoy the open-air comfort of espadrilles wearing a pair of espadrille sandals.

Go open-air comfy with some espadrille sandals. Espadrille sandals can range from flat varieties to wedge high heels. You have a handful of options if you fancy a pair of espadrille sandals.

Espadrille Sneakers.

^ from: (Lulu's) - Want some sneakers with a different sort of flair? Try espadrille sneakers.

Most espadrilles are fairly casual to begin with. Also fairly casual are sneakers. What do you say we combine the two? Behold- espadrille sneakers! They provide all the espadrille comfort while also making as much a style statement as sneakers. Espadrille sneakers can be rugged in appearance or fairly clean. Some of them can be quite adorable. Espadrille sneakers can be seen as a more dressy pair of almost any average sneakers. If you look to espadrille sneakers as shoes to suit you well for the workplace or for any number of active functions, you may be rather disappointed with espadrille sneakers.

Espadrille sneakers could be styled with nearly any style of casual outfits. If you're feeling chic, you could even pair some espadrille sneakers with a maxi dress. In fact, one fashionista paired her espadrille sneakers with a maxi dress in this blog post on "The Mom Edit".

Now that you've seen a variety of espadrilles in this blog post, feel free to find some espadrilles to incorporate into your wardrobe. Rock your style!
