Derby Hats

With the #KyDerby coming up, I figured I'd discuss derby fashion. More importantly- those flamboyant hats worn by fashionistas. Derby hats are the focal point of this blog post, especially feminine ones. These are big and expressive hats with fancy designs to them. What makes these hats unique are their fancy designs. These are extra girly designs that are almost more suited for pictures or runway models than real people. Some of these eccentric designs on these usually wide-brimmed hats include various frills, flowers, ribbons, and all other kinds of adornments. Sometimes, a derby hat seems like they could overwhelm womens' heads or seem like they are going to eat one's head from the top on down. It is their unique appeal that makes them fashionable.

To be honest, I had intended to be about derby fashion in general, but I decided instead to focus on derby hats worn by women.

Cutting Your Own Hair

Recently for the first time ever, I cut my own hair. Cutting your own hair will save you from going to the barber. It is more difficult to do so since you are cutting your own hair, and you have to be aware of what hair remains on your head. I'll explain my experience cutting my own hair and what I've done to successfully cut my own hair.

This blog post mostly concerns cutting your own hair, granted you have short hair. I may consider doing some future post regarding cutting longer hair or something. Stay with "StyleSpace by JBM" if I do consider making and releasing such a blog post.

--- Cutting Your Own Hair ---

Let me explain my experience cutting my own hair. With a grooming kit I bought a year or so ago, I used the electric clippers and a small mirror to try to successfully cut my hair. I did this standing up looking into the mirror in my bathroom. To easily collect clumps of hair, I stood tall while also having a wastebasket near me to get rid of the clumps of hair I was about to shave off. I do not have any pictures to share. What I WILL do is show off the different steps I implemented to how I cut my own hair.

Step 1 - Preparation.

The first thing I did was simply brush my hair. Brushing my hair obviously makes it easier for the hair to get shaved off. It wouldn't be real fun or effective if one's hair isn't properly sorted.

Step 2 - The Front and Sides.

I went ahead and started going after parts of my head up front and on the sides. Early on, I didn't feel like I would had a barber cut my hair. So I started taking off parts of my hair that I felt I successfully got rid of and put those clumps into the wastebasket. I initially used clip-on parts because I thought I would need them to properly shave off bits of my hair. Really, I didn't need those clip-on parts because the electric clippers I had worked just fine going through my hair. I went ahead and started going through parts of my hair in an upward motion to get the front and sides of my hair. As I felt parts of my hair were successfully shaven off, I took those clumps of hair and put them into the trash bin.

I kept on going until I felt like I did a majority of the front and sides of my hair. Now, things were going to get tricky because I have a lot of hair left at the back of my head.

Step 3 - The Back.

Without a hand mirror, it can be tough to see what you're doing with your hair as you try to cut it. My initial instinct was to shave away at parts of my hair with my clippers. That is a good strategy unless you really know what you're doing and if you're confident in where you are actually doing the work. I was only so confident because I knew I was going to possibly have parts of my hair that I forgot to cut off. I still made sure to pick off clumps of hair that was successfully cut off and put those clumps into the trash.

So after doing the back of my head, I should be happy I cut off all of my hair and celebrate like a boss, right? Actually, no.

Step 4 - Leftovers.

I have a small hand mirror that I used to see if I had any hair left on the back of my head. I used both the bathroom mirror and my small mirror to detect any remaining clumps of hair off the back of my head that I may have missed. I quickly took out those parts of my hair to complete the job. It was a bit hard trying to hold the hand mirror in one hand while using my clippers in my other. I am right-handed, so my left hand had the hand mirror while my right hand had the clippers. Eventually, I found the extra bits of hair I missed and simply shaved them off with my clippers.


When I felt like I did all I could to properly cut my hair, it was time for me to get back to life as normal.

--- Cutting Your Own Hair: In the End... ---

I felt quite accomplished. I took on a challenge and had a lot to learn, but I still managed to successfully cut off all of my hair by myself. My mom and stepfather were even amazed that I was able to successfully cut my hair. I basically saved myself a $15 US Dollar haircut from the barber. I didn't really care about having some fancy haircut or some kind of unique haircut- all I cared about was cutting my own hair so that I can have a clean head and save money and a trip to the barber.

Though it can be a money-saver and though you can do it yourself, it is by no means easy. It sometimes is better to know that there is someone who can actually see ALL of your hair and be able to cut it properly. If alone and with a grooming kit that includes electric clippers, you too can cut your own hair. It is a unique challenge that can be pretty rewarding if you successfully can cut your hair without much in the way of any hair you missed cutting.

Would I cut my own hair again when my hair fully grows again? I probably would. It was an experience and a challenge that I took on and succeeded at. As with any experience, you learn from an experience and try to perform the same task you've done before, only more efficiently.

Necklaces

A necklace can add extra style to your outfits. They are surely a classy staple among females in office settings. Necklaces can also be fun to wear for some casual looks. Even some males wear necklaces, and there are some unisex necklaces. No matter who you are, it is time to dress up your neck with a necklace or two. This blog post is all about necklaces. I will be sure to offer a whole lot of insight on necklaces since there are so many kinds that appeal to so many senses.

The best way to dress up your neck is with a necklace. Necklaces can come in many varieties ranging from simple to statement-making. They can be casual or classy. They can be priced very low or have very exorbitant prices. There are necklaces for both males and females, even though you'll mostly see females sport necklaces as part of their wardrobe.

More casual necklaces can be comfortably worn to go with a casual outfit. Some casual necklaces are either bought from certain stores, and some even are made by others in a do-it-yourself (DIY) manner. Some necklaces are even kind of hand-me-downs. Imagine having a vintage style necklace as part of your wardrobe. Some people into upcycling and other eco-friendly fashion practices simply make some of their own repurposed or guilt-free necklaces. These more casual and inexpensive necklace can be quite personal in one's style.

Fancier necklaces capture the appeal and the personality of its wearer. A considerate gentleman would love to woo a lady with a charming necklace. (I can already sense my female audience nudging their boyfriend/fiancé/husband as I mention men and necklaces.) :D Anyhow... there is nothing like a fabulous necklace for females. There are many kinds of fancy and dressy necklaces. A simple pearl necklace has its own appeal and charm. Even more so are necklaces that are layered or have any number of fabulous gems and metals to make it. Fancier necklaces help make a woman feel more confident and dazzling as she walks about. They add extra class and style to a classy woman.

When worn with any sort of outfit, a necklace adds some great attention to you and adds to your appeal and charm. Casual necklaces offer a nice touch to a casual outfit. More fancy necklaces exude class and elegance while also expressing one's beauty. No matter what, it is undeniable how much charm a necklace can provide in both the necklace itself and to one's style.

Making Your Own Clothes

Making your own fashions is a daunting and exhausting task. However, those who do so are able to define their own style. Designing clothes and/or accessories takes a lot of hard work- just like any business venture. What can you do to establish yourself with fashion? That all depends on your creativity and your willingness to offer material others will love to wear again and again. For this blog, I want to commend those who sew, knit, and do whatever to make their own fashions. Don't want to go to department stores to shop for the latest fashions? You can always make your own fashions! Or at least, alter other designers' clothes to make your own unique pieces. This blog post is all about making your own fashions.

This blog entry concerns handmade fashions. It is about making your own fashions and honoring those who sew or knit their own fashions. I'm dedicating this one to the do-it-yourself (or DIY) crowd. This includes sewing, crocheting, knitting, and upcycling fashions.

About the Label: "Do-It-Yourself"

For items listed until this label, the topics in the Do-It-Yourself (or DIY) label all relate to making your own clothing or accessories. I do not have any DIY material to share with anyone, but I will make mention to those who make their own items.

--- Why Make Your Own Clothes? ---

There are lots of clothes and accessories to buy in stores and online. Some people would prefer making their own clothes that define their own style. One of fashion's biggest challenges is to provide fashions that are wearable and expressive. Fashion isn't just for keeping us clothed and protected- it should also be fun and expressive. Who wants to look like everybody else? If we could, we could possibly make our own clothes from start to finish to express ourselves however we please. We would have our own wardrobes rather than always look to fashion designers ranging from small-time designers to world-renowned designers.

So what does it take to make your own clothes? For starters, many people sew their clothes. Those very good at sewing usually pick up a lot of items from crafts stores such as spools of thread or yarn. People will often get themselves sewing machines to help jump start the sewing process. The ones who don't mind doing knitting will calmly and kindly knit to their heart's delight. Some people will even purchase sewing patterns and make whatever the sewing pattern offers.

The biggest draw towards making your own fashion is that you don't need to spend money on buying other designers' fashions to look and feel your best.

There are a number of ways to make your own clothes. Some of the many ways are listed in these individual sections:

Sewing.

While it's perfectly fine to go to the store to purchase clothes from well-known and little-known makes, the real beauty lies in being able to make your own clothes. So what if what you make isn't made by some world-renowned designer or label? The creativity exists in making clothes that no store will ever sell (unless you offer your material for sale). Those endowed with a sewing machine and lots of skill in sewing clothes will be blessed with making all kinds of fashion items. They can be either clothes or some accessories. In addition, this is more like old school clothes making. Some people (like my grandmother) still owns and uses her sewing machine to make clothes. I even remember as a youth just seeing some packs of sewing patterns left over from my grandmother.

A trip down to the fabric store or a hobby store can help you to get started in sewing your own fashions. You usually go pick out fabric or any other materials you need to build your own items. What begins as rolls of thread can eventually lead to stylish fashions with time and effort. It goes to show that some people would rather sew their own clothes than always go out shopping for the latest styles. There's another reason why sewing is better- there may be certain items not available for certain sizes. There is greater satisfaction knowing that you can design your own clothes the way you want to in complimenting your own style. Being able to create and maintain your own clothes is a testament of cool that no one else can aspire to.

Crocheting and Knitting.

There is a misconception that only elderly people knit clothes. In fact, I read this article on helium.com about teenagers who knit their own clothes. That's right- teen girls who knit their own clothes. They can range from accessories to certain kinds of outerwear. Knitting and crocheting is not just for older women. You'd be surprised how many young people sew or knit their own clothes.

Upcycling.

Upcycle it, don't trash it! The best way to describe upcycling is by taking worthless or useless items and turning them into other things. Relevant to this blog entry, items are upcycled for clothes and accessories. It is a trendy method of waste reduction by turning used items into fashions. This kind of ties into my past blog entry on "John's Blog Space" about eco-friendly fashions since it involves taking what already exists, rather than trashing things for good.

These are some of many methods in which people make their own fashions. They either come from patterns, material (such as threads and fabric), or they come from old items to make new fashions. Whatever the case, there are many ways to passionately make your own fashions and accessories. You just have to have creativity and charm in making these fashions for you or someone else.

Whether designing clothes, accessories, or whatever; you face a tough challenge. This is a tough challenge because you are solely responsible for coming up with unique fashions for yourself or for others. You want to make unique and creative fashions reflecting your personality and sense of style. If you feel you have the passion and determination to do such, then I wish you nothing but the best in your efforts.

Just the thought of knowing you've incorporated your own fashion style to go with styles from other designers is a unique touch. Some bloggers even have their own do-it-yourself (DIY) material on how to design certain items to incorporate into your wardrobe. They may include modifying clothes you already own, or they may involve making completely new outfits. No matter what, it is all up to you to make and enjoy your own fashions.

You still may purchase clothes and accessories from other designers, but it is always cool to know that making your own designs to go along with other designers' fashions make you stand out fashionably.
