Excuse me while I slip into something more comforable- slip dresses and slip skirts! Slip dresses and skirts are elegant and ludicrously comfortable. They are also charming to wear. A slip dress or skirt offers silky smooth elegance. Some fashionistas take advantage of their elegance with any number of great styling options. Some others try to play down their elegance with casual garment including denim jean jackets/vests, sneakers, combat boots, and the like. Originally a blog post to be about silk dresses and silk skirts, most of what I was going to focus on has to do with slip dresses/skirts. So welcome to my discussion of slip dresses and slip skirts on "StyleSpace by JBM!"

Any garments that feel soft to the touch is often very comfortable and elegant to the wearer. So is the case with slip dresses and slip skirts. Their shiny appearance along with their fluid feel make such dresses and skirts charming to wear. Slip dresses/skirts can also be seen like wearing lingerie outside of the house. As popular as lingerie can be for normal outfits, slip dresses and slip skirts can be just as stylish outside the house. Most slip dresses/skirts, in fact, are more lingerie/lounge style garments.
What do slip dresses and slip skirts provide? Silky comfort and elegance. Many slip dresses and slip skirts can be worn comfortably around the house to lovingly lounge. A fashionista can wear a slip dress/skirt outdoors with a handful of chic shoes. Slip dresses/skirts can be worn from day into night as versatile as they can be. You can wear a slip dress/skirt to wear in the daytime. You can then go with a slip dress/skirt for a date night, girls night out, any kind of formal dinner or formal occasion, or anything like that. A simple change of shoes along with various makeup touches and maybe some extra accessories can take a slip dress/skirt from day to night. The versatility of such slip dresses and skirts are substantiated. A chic pair of pumps can easily make a slip dress/skirt wearable all day long. Some daytime sandals would be nice, but some more chic sandals could work all day also.
Speaking of styling slip dresses and slip skirts, let's delve deeper into the topic and take a look at a few different style options. Next section...
Slip Dresses and Slip Skirts: Styling
Most fashionistas tend to nicely wear slip dresses and slip skirts with some chic shoes. Namely, some stylish pumps, chic sandals, or maybe even some chic boots. A fashionista can wear a blazer to keep things classy. On the other hand, those who want to make slip dresses or slip skirts casual will usually go with a denim jean jacket or maybe a denim jean vest. Originally, this blog post was going to be about questioning certain footwear choices with slip dresses and slip skirts. Also originally, this was to be a post to be about silk dresses; but because of the content I was mostly relating to, I changed my focus to slip dresses and slip skirts. So to that end, I'll question some footwear choices of slip dresses/skirts in this section.
Slip Dresses and Skirts - With Sneakers.
^ from: (Pinterest) - Can/Should slip dresses and skirts be paired with sneakers? Some say you can.
If a denim jean jacket or denim jean vest isn't casual enough, try pairing a slip dress/skirt with sneakers. This is a way to make something as elegantly powerful as a slip dress/skirt be played down to be worn casually. I usually advise against pairing such dresses/skirts with sneakers. The only excuse I'd understand is if you're wearing sneakers as alternative footwear from having to wear high heels of some kind. Another excuse I could understand why one would pair a slip dress/skirt with sneakers is if you are into athleisure style. You know, where one tries to infuse sporty style with any sort of outfit. But if you're talking about a slip dress/skirt with sneakers as the main outfit, then I'm against it. Slip dresses and slip skirts with sneakers ruin the elegant balance of the slip dress/skirt. I just don't think they go together well enough to be considered stylish.
However, there are some fashionistas who can pull off hot looks by wearing sneakers slip dresses/skirts. I think if you're going to pair sneakers with (especially) a slip dress, I'd seek a slip dress that either is of a mini length or perhaps a long slip dress/skirt with a fairly high slit on either side or both sides. Sneakers with a slim profile can be nicely worn without too much ruin in balance. Chunky sneakers with slip dresses or slip skirts can be a great option and adds some extra attention from the waist down. Wedge sneakers may be okay, but there aren't too many I recommend. If you want examples of chunky sneakers that can go well with slip dresses and skirts, try sneakers like the FILA Disruptor 2 or any of the platform sneakers from Superga. If you are fancy and have money to burn, you could even go with the JIMMY CHOO Diamond sneakers. I would completely avoid totally casual sneakers- such as Converses and VANS. Keds sneakers are okay to me with slip dresses or slip skirts. Extreme platform sneakers from the likes of Buffalo or Naked Wolfe are overkill for a slip dress or slip skirt.
MY SUMMARY - Slip Dresses/Skirts With Sneakers:
+ sleek profile sneakers
+ chunky sneakers are okay, as long as they don't have awful-looking heels or do not have heels
- avoid active sneakers, including basketball sneakers (examples: NIKE Ones, Adidas Superstar, etc.)
- avoid sneakers with loud colors or patterns
- avoid extreme platform sneakers (like from Buffalo, Naked Wolfe, Demonia, etc.)
Slip Dresses and Skirts - With Combat Boots.
^ from: (Pinterest) - Want some hardness with your soft slip dress/skirt? Try some combat boots!
If you think slip dresses/skirts are a big juxtaposition, there is an even bigger juxtaposition pairing these slipy skirts and dresses with combat boots! Combat boots completely ruin the balance of a slip dress or slip skirt to not stylish levels. Some fashionistas, though, want that sort of edginess of combat boots to ruin the balance of an elegant slip dress or slip skirt. Some may even go as far as trying on fishnet tights for extra edge. I am not someone who recommends tights or leggings because I often get tired of them and don't like most tights.
MY SUMMARY - slip Dresses/Skirts With Combat Boots:
+ combat boots are fairly fine, though I don't recommend them with slip dresses/skirts
+ go with fishnet tights if you want some extra edge
- to me, avoid any patterned combat boots with a slip dress/skirt
Slip Dresses and Skirts - With Boots or Booties (Besides Combat Boots).
^ from: (Pinterest) - A slip dress/skirt with any sort of boots can still be plenty stylish depending on your style tastes.
Boots and booties are fair game with slip dresses and slip skirts. If it is too cold, a tall pair of boots will serve you well. Booties have shown you can enjoy the style of boots all season long. I am not fond of over-knee boots, but if they are your thing, I would avoid any flat over-knee boots. If you're the Bohemian type, surely seek a stylish pair of cowboy boots or some earthen style booties. I also might avoid almost any lace-up boots. Wedge boots can be nice as daytime boots, but I don't know about them being elegant enough for a night outfit. So you have your options with boots and booties to style slip dresses/skirts.
MY SUMMARY - slip Dresses/Skirts With Boots or Booties:
+ many different options for boots and booties
+ preferably any boots below the knees will work well to me
+ Bohemian-friendly boot styles will work along with cowboy boots/booties
+ riding boots are okay with slip dresses and slip skirts, if you want to do that pairing
- almost any over-knee boots with slip dresses or slip skirts are a no-no (to me)
- perhaps avoid lace-up boots
- wedge boots may be stylish for daytime, but maybe not for night
- avoid suede boots/booties with slip dresses/skirts
- avoid rain boots entirely with slip dresses and slip skirts
- avoid sheepskin boots (like from UGG or EMU) entirely with slip dresses and slip skirts
Slip Dresses and Slip Skirts: Other Footwear.
To close out the discussion on styling slip dresses/skirts with certain footwear, I figured I'd discuss a handful of other kinds of footwear to style with slip dresses and slip skirts. Let's start with sandals.Sandals are very much fair game along with many different peep/open toe footwear. The most stylish you can be for daytime wear with a slip dress or slip skirt would be a nice pair of platform wedge sandals. While thong sandals can be okay, especially avoid any seriously casual and plain thong sandals. I dislike almost any pom pom garments or footwear, so I'd avoid pom pom sandals of any kind with silk dresses/skirts.
You may also go with a stylish pair of espadrilles. I'd prefer wedge espadrilles or wrap wedge espadrilles. Flat espadrilles are okay, but I don't think they go too well with slip dresses or slip skirts.
Loafers are a nice option as well for silk dresses/skirts. These days, a lot of fashionistas go with loafer mules. I'm okay with loafer mules; just avoid the fur-trimmed ones I've seen.
A classy pair of oxfords, oxford pumps, or brogues also go nicely with slip dresses and slip skirts. Most of you I normally don't praise oxfords or brogues much. I don't hate them entirely, though. You can certainly be stylish with oxford pumps with silk dresses/skirts.
I have no problem with boat/deck shoes. With slip dresses/skirts, however... I'd avoid pairing such shoes with these slip dresses/skirts.
MY SUMMARY: Slip Dresses and Slip Skirts With Other Footwear: + Preferably a chic pair of sandals are the best sandal option
+ most daytime sandals are perfectly fine with slip dresses/skirts
+ I am not fond of most slide sandals, but you can surely wear them with slip dresses/skirts
+ I think espadrilles are okay; best to go with some wedge espadrilles or some wrap wedge espadrilles
+ most loafers and loafer mules are okay
+ oxfords (including oxford pumps) and brogues are okay with slip dresses and slip skirts
- thong sandals are okay, but really casual and basic thong sandals should be avoided
- avoid boat/deck shoes
- I dislike them, but almost any pom pom footwear should be avoided with silk dresses/skirts
Slip Dresses and Slip Skirts - Outerwear.
^ from: (Pinterest) - A coat with a slip dress or slip skirt can be great outerwear options.
It may seem foolish to wear a slip dress (or maybe even a slip skirt) in cool or cold weather. If it does get cold, you can very much wear any sort of jacket or coat. A blazer keeps a slip dress or slip skirt classy. If you're going the casual route, surely pair a slip dress/skirt with a denim jean jacket or maybe even certain non-denim jackets. Stylish edge can be had if you pair a slip dress or slip skirt with a motorcycle jacket of some kind. You may even go with a bomber jacket or a parka, but I'd avoid them. A trench coat is more than stylish if you want a coat option for a slip dress or slip skirt. I can't think of too many against options with coats. I would avoid ponchos with slip dresses/skirts.
MY SUMMARY: Slip Dresses and Skirts With Outerwear:
+ a blazer or any chic jacket is fine with any slip dress or slip skirt
+ motorcycle jackets are equally chic with slip dresses or slip skirts; they can be edgy without ruining the elegant balance
+ trench coats are wonderful with slip dresses or slip skirts day or night
+ keep it casual with various denim jean jackets or denim jean vests
- I don't recommend bomber jackets or parkas with slip dresses or slip skirts, but they are okay if you want to wear them
Here are some final thoughts coming up in the next section.
slip Dresses and slip Skirts: Final Thoughts
Elegant, smooth, and stylish; slip dresses and slip skirts have a level of feminine appeal not to be understated. Some slip dresses and slip skirts can be great to wear all day- even including certain night functions. While they can be such lovely garments, care is needed to avoid ruining the balance of elegance they provide. It can be almost too easy to take such dresses and skirts and ruin the balance of an outfit severely. Some fashionistas dare wear slip dresses/skirts with sneakers or even combat boots. While they are fair game, I usually think they easily can kill the elegance and style of most slip dresses and slip skirts. If you ARE going the sneakers route, though, any sort of chic sneakers with a sleek profile or which are not super casual (like Converses, VANS, etc.) will work well. Combat boots are also fair game, but I don't like them all that much to recommend with slip dresses/skirts. Almost any jacket, vest, or coat will be great options for some added outerwear style with slip dreses/skirts. You may even try bomber jackets and parkas, though not recommended by me. Just avoid ponchos. slip dresses and slip skirts have a great amount of elegance and should be paired with garments and footwear that maintain (or even elevate) their elegance.
This post is pretty much over. The next section is completely optional but would be appreciated.
