Mini Dress With Sneakers

John B. Marine | 4:32 PM | | | |
This post is a spinoff of a #dressandsneakers topic. Usually, a "rule" of mine is to never discuss anything Kardashian/Jenner. However, I must confess- Kendall Jenner provided a cute paring of sneakers with a mini dress. In 2017, she paired a white mini dress that had black polka dots with a pair of Adidas sneakers. This led to showcasing a hot amount of leg while wearing an otherwise cute mini dress. And considering she was wearing some Adidas sneakers, Kendall Jenner shown a sporty and casual side to what could have been better complimented by a chic pair of pumps or sandals.

In case you are wondering about the outfit Kendall Jenner wore that I praised, that would be THIS:

So if this look of a mini dress and sneakers interests you, I'd like to offer a further discussion of this look with this blog post.

Mini Dress With Sneakers

Let's go through some talking points about this look. Consider the following...

The Mini Dress + Sneakers Combination.

Kendall Jenner isn't the only celebrity who attempted to make mini dresses with sneakers cute. Others have tried the mini dress + sneakers look such as Hailey Baldwin, Gigi Hadid, Rihanna, and even Kylie Jenner among others.

Let's dissect the look into separate elements.

A mini dress (or even a mini skirt) is meant to be flirty and hot. They allow for the wearer to showcase hot amounts of leg from an enticing garment. A mini dress allows for feminine and ladylike charm. Even a possibly trashy mini dress can still plenty enticing. We all know there are many guys out there who would love seeing a sexy, confident lady wearing a hot mini dress.

Sneakers suggest casual or sporty vibes. Sneakers may be worn for comfortable footwear apart from more dressy or stylish footwear. Some may even prefer sneakers over flip-flop/thong sandals for casual wear. As some fashionistas are trying to prove, sneakers are becoming an alternative to wearing sexy heeled shoes. Some of the "ugly sneakers" or "dad sneakers" even can make a mini dress outfit cute.

If you combine the elements of a mini dress and sneakers together, the results usually end up being a style mismatch. It can suggest some female may be trying to downplay a mini dress by wearing sneakers instead of a pair of high-heel pumps, sandals, or boots. Or it may suggest a fashionable female wants to showcase a sporty side to her wardrobe. It can be a mismatch that ultimately leads to a ruined outfit. However, and if done right, a mini dress with sneakers can be surprisingly sexy or unexpectedly sexy. Wearing sneakers to go with a mini dress can make night-style dresses casual and daytime. It also depends on what sneakers are being worn with any sort of casual or dressy mini dress. A glamourous or sexy mini dress with some Converse sneakers or Vans sneakers can be a horrid combination (at least to me). A fairly flirty mini dress with some Keds or certain sporty sneakers can be both casual and cute. These days, the advent of chunky sneakers can compliment most mini dress outfits well. Mini dresses and sneakers are not for every fashionista. You'll have to experiment a lot to feel confident in your own style to rock this look to perfection.

Mini Dress + Sneakers Inspirations.

Do you want inspiration that mini dresses with sneakers can have their appeal? Take a look at this section! You may skip this section if you aren't interested in any inspiration of mini dresses with sneakers.

• Here is an article I found online with some extra angles of Kendall Jenner's polka dot mini dress with sneakers: Kendall Jenner - Leggy Candids in Beverly Hills.

• Kendall Jenner has her own mini dress + sneakers outfit, but so too does sister Kylie! A backless mini dress meant for a night out was worn by Kylie Jenner with sneakers: Kylie Jenner Wears Manning Cartell Minidress While in France For Cannes.

• This is Hailey Baldwin in a mini dress with some somewhat chunky active sneakers: Hailey Baldwin White Minidress.

• But really... if there was one look that got me to thinking about this look further, it is from the realm of Second Life. I disliked this look put together by a popular Second Life creator, but I also secretly liked it because while unexpected, it somehow worked. I even questioned if this pairing was either "uniquely sexy, or so stylishly wrong that it's right." The creator defines this pairing as "...sexy, stylish, and very contemporary." Here is the outfit that first got me to think about mini dresses with sneakers: maitreya: Twist Dress and Low Sneakers.

"...Surprisingly Sexy or Unexpectedly Sexy?"

Okay. So maybe you read my introductory portion of this blog post and question what I mean about the combination of a mini dress with sneakers as surprisingly or unexpectedly sexy. Well, what I mean is that there is a certain quality to this fashion combination that can actually be surprisingly hot. Usually a mini dress with a sassy pair of high-heel footwear usually will equal one hot look. On the other hand, can a mini dress still be hot to wear when paired with sneakers?

It depends on three real factors- the mini dress itself, the sneakers themselves, and how the individual wears both items.

Mini Dress + Sneakers: What Works?

Let's dissect the look some more.

The Mini Dress.

What works for mini dresses before if pairing with sneakers? Since we're talking mini dresses, I will leave it up to you to find a mini dress style that suits you best. There are a lot of casual dresses that are of mini length (or what can be considered "mini"). You may go super-sexy with the bodycon/bandage mini dress, or you can go cute with a fun A-line (or "skater") dress. Some mini dresses have a sporty appearance and will go perfectly with almost any kind of sneakers. Some other mini dresses were meant for nights out or trying to woo single guys. If you feel the need to downplay an otherwise chic mini dress with sneakers (or even a denim jean jacket), just know not every dress + sneaker combination works.

Some of you know I specifically indicated what I consider to be elegant and/or ladylike. Therefore, some of these design elements only take away from their loveliness when paired with sneakers. For example, I think a pair of sporty sneakers would ruin a sheath dress. Converse-type sneakers would ruin a romantic, satin, off-shoulder dress. Should you try to ruin the balance of a dress with a certain kind of sneakers? You can- just be careful.

The Sneakers.

Don't just immediately pick up your favorite casual sneakers and think you automatically look hot with any mini dress. I am sorry if I disappoint some of you, but I never liked Converse sneakers much. So those would be the sneakers I'd avoid if you're trying this. I also dislike basketball sneakers, so avoid these to go with dresses as well. I haven't been too fond of high-top sneakers. I would also stay away from extremely worn out sneakers.

I have always tended to find Keds to be a great pair of casual sneakers to compliment certain outfits such as mini dresses. I say if you're going the glamour route with a fancy mini dress, it is best to find a sleek pair of sneakers that are equally elegant. I think the best way for this to work is if you pair a mini dress with a stylish pair of sneakers. That's why when I put together Polyvore (RIP, Polyvore...) sets of different sneaker pairings that I only paired chic mini dresses with equally chic sneakers.

So on the sneaker front, I say match elegance with elegance. If you dare go mini dress + sneakers, a sequin mini dress would look best with a sleek pair of sporty sneakers or chic sneakers. I find a lot of sleek low-top sporty sneakers to go well with a number of mini dresses- like the Adidas Superstar. You may be more aggressive and go with some chunky sneakers- such as the FILA Disruptor. You may also opt for sneakers from higher end designers- such as Gucci, Lacoste, Robert Clergerie, Ash, and the like. Platform sneakers also can work very well with mini dresses- a popular designer of platform sneakers fashionistas wear are from Superga. There are also some slip-on sneakers and laceless sneakers that can also go well with mini dresses. While I advise against them, if you prefer certain wedge sneakers, go with them to go with your mini dress.

Experiment to your heart's delight!

Other Considerations

The focus of this point dress-wise is in mini dresses. Make sure you feel confident enough to wear a mini dress before trying to pair them with any sort of footwear. Are you comfortable enough showcasing your legs while sporting a cute/sexy/sporty mini dress? One other thing- I would absolutely avoid leggings or tights to go with a mini dress and sneakers look. This is even if temperatures are cold. I have NEVER seen tights + sneakers work with any outfit, let alone with dresses. So spare yourself the trouble of overdressing and poisoning outfits in this regard.

Do White Sneakers Work Best?

Here is another admittance of mine regarding dresses with sneakers- I tend to find white sneakers to work best. As we all know, though, it can be boring to go with one popular color. That's why, for example, fashionistas try to wear lipstick in shades other than red or pink. Does that mean you should wear Hot Pink sneakers with a Cobalt Blue mini dress? Should you rock your little black dress with some scarlet red sneakers?

White sneakers are perfectly fine paired with dresses. If you prefer, kind of go with some interesting options to jazz up a basic pair of white sneakers. Go for unique details on the sides or maybe different colored accents. When I researched dresses with sneakers, a number of fashionistas were sporting some white Adidas Superstar sneakers with some different color stripes on the sides or maybe some different color back to them. Experiment and find what looks best to you.

So now you have a very decent idea of how to make the mini dress + sneakers look work. At least... how I see it working.
