Suits and Sneakers

John B. Marine | 9:37 AM | | |
Suits and sneakers give off an unprofessional vibe. In some cases, however, they can be great for business casual or when you are trying to look polished but remain casual. In another attempt to make sneakers chic, some dare pair sneakers with certain classy-style outfits. Some males commonly pair certain sneakers with classy or chic outfits. They will play up some semi-formal outfits with sneakers. Females often will find themselves a classy pant suit or skirt suit with sneakers. No matter what, trying to add some sporty or casual appeal to an otherwise classy style outfit is what this discussion is about here on "StyleSpace by JBM." Welcome to another blog post of mine!

Most of what I have to discuss primarily involves feminine suits and sneakers looks. However, some elements of my discussion can also pertain to male suits and sneakers looks.

Suits and Sneakers

I tried to find the best possible image(s) to set the mood for this post. So here goes...

suit and sneakers
^ from: (Styleoholic) - Classy casual. A suit paired with a pair of sneakers offers a unique way to be chic.

How you dress can say a lot about you. You could be sending a message opposite of whatever you believe in or stand for. So therefore, one would send mixed messages if one was wearing a well-polished suit but wearing something like flip-flop/thong sandals, a spiked choker, or something overly offensive or unprofessional. In the case of wearing a suit or some classy-type outfit, sneakers can provide some serious diversion and ruin your proper style balance.

Unlike when I debated pairing certain dresses with sneakers, suits and sneakers can actually work. I sort of found myself approving more of suits and sneakers outfits more than certain dresses paired with sneakers. Just like with outfits, certain sneakers will actually pair very well with certain suits. It is also possible one can pair sneakers with a semi-formal or formal outfit and not look unprofessional. This would be the ultimate goal for most fashionable types.

Some business casual-type outfits have a certain feel to where some semi-formal or formal outfits can actually be made fun with sneakers. The fashionable person who is able to provide some spice to what seems a boring suit can add a great deal of style. Sure, proper shoes will work best, but it is sometimes fashion fun to play with certain footwear, like sneakers.

The suit and sneakers look can also provide the appeal for athleisure. One could wear a classy style outfit but pair the suit with active-type sneakers. The options are many for those trying to go casual with sneakers or provide a sporty touch with sneakers.

To some other fashionable types, suits and sneakers can provide the ever-popular model off-duty look. A suit and sneakers can be a sign of someone dressed for success but then have some time to relax from being in fancy shoes. Only thing is that some make sneakers as a primary part of a suit outfit; as opposed to changing into more comfortable shoes from wearing fancy shoes.

Having said this, let me unpack the suits and sneakers aspect of this topic.

Suits and Sneakers: The Elements

For a suit and sneakers outfit to work, one needs proper items from both sides of the equation. Let me guide you through here.

Suits and Sneakers: The Suits.

We all know the wonders a well-structured suit can provide. A suit evokes power and class. Anything from a fully proper suit to some business casual pieces can be stylish.

On the male side, you may see a casually classy male wear some kind of outfit consisting of a blazer, a stylish button-down shirt, and some pants. Alternatively, a stylish male may dress up in a blazer, a T-shirt, and either classy pants or even some jeans.

On the female side, the options are a bit expanded. Any female in a power suit can feel amazing. Some female suits don't have to be all fancy. In fact, a female suit can consist of a blazer, some dressy pants, and some kind of T-shirt. Some shorts suits may not be appropriate for most office settings, but they can be just as chic. Finally, let us not forget skirt suits and dress suits. One can surely work a classy skirt outfit for an office or date setting.

No matter how you structure your suit, feeling empowered and in control is key.

Suits and Sneakers: The Sneakers.

What are you suggesting by wearing sneakers with classy outfits rather than classy shoes? Well, for some, it is about classy casual. Some others try to be chic and have a little fun with classy outfits. Going with sneakers instead of classy shoes can seem unprofessional and giving certain vibes opposite of a classy, put-together outfit. Sneakers always suggest casual and always suggesting sporty. Most office settings would discredit wearing outfits with sneakers unless it's Casual Friday at the office. One must still remain within bounds of professional in one's style of classy dressing.

However, sneakers with classy outfits are not entirely taboo. Sneakers with a suit can be a smart and fresh styling exercise. Some sneakers actually go well with certain suits or classy outfits. To me, sneakers that have sleek profiles and don't appear overly casual can go well with many suits, classy, or preppy outfits. I would mostly avoid certain very casual sneakers or certain active sneakers. Some of the most basic sneakers to go with suits for fashionistas would be a simple pair of Keds Champion sneakers. Some others would go with a pair of lace-less or slip-on sneakers. Many would opt for a pair of Converses for both males and females to go with suits. You can classy casual and feminine if you get yourself a pair of wedge sneakers. If you're the high-end designer type, go find yourself a pair of expensive sneakers to compliment your suit. You have a number of options in this department.

If there is anything I'd advise against in trying to do the suit and sneakers look, I'd avoid pairing suits with overaggressive or possibly offensive sneakers from companies like Dolls Kill, Demonia, or such companies. I also would avoid sneaker mules. Sneaker pumps would seem interesting to remain classy or feminine, but I'd advise against a lot of these as well. It would be better to go with a stylish pair of stylish wedge sneakers instead if you fancy having decently-heeled feminine sneakers to go with suits.

Next up is some blogger insight on suits and sneakers. Next section, please...

Suits and Sneakers: Blogger Examples

Here are some blog posts and other media to help express the suit and sneaker look. I am showing you now what I have been trying to discuss in this blog post. You may visit these blogs for some inspiration regarding pairing suits with sneakers as well as advice on how to pull such looks off:

"What Does Business Casual Mean In Today’s Workplace?" (Color and Grace) « a red pant suit paired with sporty sneakers.

"SUITS AND SNEAKERS | THE NEW KICKS ON THE BLOCK" (Coming In Clutch) « a crimson pant suit paired with chunky athletic sneakers.

Now let's offer some final thoughts.

Suits and Sneakers: Final Thoughts

Even if at the risk of looking unprofessional, wearing sneakers with a suit can be a great styling exercise. Unconventional chic style can be had by trying put on a pair of sneakers to compliment a suit or some other business casual outfit. I would avoid any sneakers that are very colored. The safest bet would be to go with a pair of white sneakers. Or at least, white sneakers with minimal details. While the idea of pairing suits with sneakers seems like a total mismatch, done right, such outfits can actually be quite fun. In fact, some suit and sneakers outfits can sometimes be a better pairing than suits with more classy footwear.
