Bike Shorts

John B. Marine | 9:32 AM | | | |
(UPDATED: July 10, 2019)
Even if you are not a bicyclist, bike shorts have trended a lot lately. Bike shorts are form-fitting active shorts that usually hit somewhere between mid-thigh and sometimes above the knees. I get bored with leggings and skinny bottoms often times that I'm like... "why THIS trending?" Either way, bike shorts are here and are trending like mad. Time to discuss these form-fitting shorts in some extra detail with my own opinions.

Bike Shorts

Here is a pair of bike shorts to help set the mood of this blog post:

^ from: www.rainbowshops.com - Bike shorts have trended recently, proving you don't have to be a cyclist to enjoy them.

^ from: www.aritzia.com - Bike shorts- sort of the way they were meant to be worn.

^ from: www.lulus.com - This picture is an attempt at making bike shorts chic, which is mostly how a lot of fashionistas will wear the bike shorts trend.

As a sports fan, I often times watch cycling competitions. So I am very aware of seeing bike shorts being worn by cyclists. Everything from various cycling events worldwide to famed cycling events like le Tour de France have several cyclists sporting cycling-specific gear, including the aforementioned bike shorts.

General Thoughts on Bike Shorts.

My basic thoughts on bike shorts are twofold. For one, bike shorts are very much practical as being long shorts to wear. Bike shorts are also functional for active types. They also can be stylish as unisex bottoms- meaning both males and females wear bike shorts.

On the other hand, I am not at all a fan of bike shorts as basic fashion. To me, it's more of the form of these shorts. Slim-fitting and hitting mid-thigh or to the knees... just not attractive to me in the least sense. As much as I hate on the '80s for various fashion mishaps that people otherwise consider "cool," bike shorts is just one of those past styles people bring back just to try to look "cool." I guess bike shorts coincide with the trend of "ugly" active sneakers trend in trying to make '80s and early '90s activewear chic. Maybe even this trend of bike shorts is trying to add to the athleisure or (a trend I never fully understood) off-duty model chic styles. Either way, I am not excited about bike shorts, and I have yet to see someone actually look stylish in bike shorts.

Examples of Bike Shorts.

I found a few blog posts to demonstrate fashionistas wearing bike shorts. Take a look at what I found just to give you some insight on these shorts being worn and how they look on them. Only one fashion personality I follow has mostly taken in the bike shorts trend that I can immediately think of, and that is French fashion blogger Marine Guillemette. So here you go:

"LE CYCLISTE ZÉBRÉ !" (Marine Guillemette) « animal-print, fashionable bike shorts.
"LA TENDANCE CYCLISTE !" (Marine Guillemette) « somewhat proper bike shorts, part of a chic outfit.

Now that you have perspective, it's time I offer some final thoughts.

Bike Shorts: Final Thoughts

Bike shorts are more practical as being long shorts among the active set. At the same time, however, they just don't appeal to me among active outfits like short running shorts or long active capris (like cropped yoga pant leggings, for example). I feel bike shorts are just another way to remind people just how horrid '80s or early '90s fashion style is. As if we NEED more reminders of ugly trends and horrid trends.

If you are an actual cyclist, surely wearing bike shorts would be an essential part of your cycling outfit. If you are just another person trying to look stylish or try the latest fashion trends, stay far away from bike shorts. I'll only care about bike shorts when they actually become fashionable enough for me to care. Until then, I will further cringe about most outfits paired with bike shorts. Oh, and don't even bother trying to pair them with some kind of preppy outfit or even with the most foxy footwear there is- these shorts just don't work at all to me. You're better off wearing Bermuda shorts or long board shorts instead as far as long shorts are concerned.

Bike Shorts Online

Even if I trash certain fashion trends, I feel I am being only one-sided if I just express my opinions and not give you a chance to do something about it if you disagree. That is what I feel makes my fashion/beauty blog a great bit different from a lot of others. So feel free to take a look at these items below if you want your own bike shorts online. Get some for yourself or for someone else. Help support me and my work any way you can; this is one way to do so. Have a look:

NOTE: Most of the items were are mostly for women's bike shorts.
