Boat/Deck Shoes

John B. Marine | 11:51 AM | | | Be the first to comment!
(UPDATED: July 17, 2015)

Boat shoes can be thought of the preppy alternative to sneakers. These unisex shoes (which are also called deck shoes) are wearable for males and females of all ages. Many people look to Sperry Top-Sider as the best in boat shoes. They, in fact, are the originators of boat shoes. They have become trendy in recent years. These slip-on shoes will nicely compliment the feet of both males and females alike.

What you are reading right now is my blog post on boat/deck shoes. In my blogging universe, StyleSpace is my space about fashion. Welcome to StyleSpace and another blog post on here!

--- Boat/Deck Shoes ---

boat shoes
^ from: www.amazon.com - Boat shoes are a preppy shoe alternative to flip-flop/thong sandals or canvas sneakers.

Boat/Deck shoes are often seen as a preppy pair of shoes to wear. These shoes are very casual, even if you are not on a boat or yachting. They are lace-up shoes that can be as comfortable to wear as a pair of loafers. The most common boat shoes are often in natural or brown colors. Among feminine boat shoes, you may even find some boat shoes that come in animal prints or in some glittery colors. Boat shoes are wearable for both males and females. They are a great pair of shoes to wear to compliment any casual look. Maybe you are a school student and want a comfortable and stylish pair of shoes to wear. Well, don't pass up boat shoes. I've seen employees of some stores wear boat shoes for their outfit. So when it comes to boat shoes, they are very classy casual. Think of these shoes as a classy pair of sneakers.

The premier name in boat shoes is Sperry Top-Sider. Sperry Top-Sider is to boat/deck shoes as UGG Australia is to sheepskin boots. The company has been making their ever-popular shoes since the company's founding in 1935. To learn more about Sperry Top-Sider, visit www.sperrytopsider.com.

--- Looks with Boat/Deck Shoes ---

What to wear with boat shoes? Here are a few ideas.

Boat Shoes With Short-Shorts.

Personally, I think it's cute to see girls wear boat shoes to with short shorts. Females who dare bare their legs on a warm or hot day with short shorts and boat shoes usually look great to me. Perhaps the reason why I like the look is because of how sleek boat shoes are to go with a pair of short-shorts.

You may or may not agree with me after seeing these images to show how cute these shoes can be with short shorts. Consider the following looks on Lookbook...

This look is denim jean short-shorts paired with boat shoes:
(boat shoes with denim short shorts example) - Lookbook

Here are some non-denim shorts:
(boat shoes with non-denim short shorts example) - Lookbook
(boat shoes with a lovely blouse and short-shorts) - Lookbook
(boat shoes with preppy shorts) - Lookbook

In addition, I've seen boat shoes worn with running shorts. So shorts and boat shoes are often a common combination for both females and even males who wear boat shoes.

Boat Shoes With Cuffed or Cropped Jeans or Pants.

I think cropped pants or jeans can be a great pair of bottoms to wear with boat shoes. Check out this example:

(boat shoes with skinny jeans) - Lookbook

Boat Shoes With Skirts or Dresses.

To be honest, I tend to like boat shoes better with pants and shorts than I do skirts or dresses. Skirts and dresses, however, are not off-limits for boat shoes. Here are a few ladies who would disagree with me about boat shoes not going well with skirts and dreses:

--- Boat Shoes: Final Thoughts ---

There is plenty to love about boat shoes. I tend to find them rather cute on females. They are a nice pair of shoes to wear with shorts (for males and females). While I haven't made much mention to males and boat shoes, they are still every bit as wearable and unique as any other shoes. I don't hate boat shoes in any sort of way or for whatever reason. Proudly wear your boat shoes if you like wearing them!

Males in Skirts and Dresses

John B. Marine | 4:59 PM | | | Be the first to comment!
Before becoming a feminine staple, men wore skirts; and I am not talking about just kilts, either. Don't think that males wearing skirts is comical. Some males actually do wear proper skirts comfortably. Some males think skirts shouldn't be feminine-exclusive. Yes- skirts (to some) shouldn't only be worn by females. If a male wants to wear a skirt; society will reject the notion, but fashion will say "go for it, man!" How do you feel about males wearing skirts? Should they wear skirts? This is somewhat of a digest and a discussion regarding males wearing skirts. In fact, I'll even take it a step further- should males wear dresses (and I'm not talking about just drag queens)?

I would like to welcome everyone to my space for fashion- StyleSpace!

--- Males in Skirts: Video Influence ---

This post will begin with some video insight on this topic. Please be sure to view these videos to get some early insight on this topic. You may click on the links to each video if you can't view Flash video. Thank you to the YouTube channels that allowed these videos to be embedded. So these are some video insights on skirts for men:

^ "Jérôme Salomé : men in skirts"

^ "FRANCE 24 Fashion : Fashion: The return of men in skirts?"

Now that you have some video insight, please continue on reading to gain more commentary from me.

--- Males in Skirts: Basic Thoughts ---

Before I begin, let me warn you- you're going to read a lot of "society" in this section. A lot of my early thoughts on this topic relate to that word. You have been warned.

Skirts are free-hanging garments that have become a staple among females. They have been worn by males long before being a key garment for females. The comfort of skirts lies in the fact that you don't have to worry about bottoms hugging up on your crotch to stay secure and comfortable. This loose feeling is what makes skirts an attractive garment to wear. Why don't we look at this issue a bit further and from a few different perspectives?

Preserving Western Society's Perception of Males.

One of the biggest deterrents in skirts and/or dresses becoming trendy for males is in the stereotypical image of males. The Western male's primary image is to be this hunky and strong heterosexual fellow who doesn't wear feminine clothes. He has to be the kind of fellow who only wear men's clothing and does what most "normal" males do. If a male chooses to wear anything usually worn by females, people will look down on this fellow and ridicule him. Males would be accused of crossdressing or accused of being gay just because a male wants to wear feminine clothing.

These reasons are probably the reasons why there are not as many skirts and dresses available for males. People will think that by virtue of a male wearing a skirt or a dress, he is somehow a disgrace to manhood. Heterosexual females would reject being with a male who loves or wants to wear skirts. Some people would think that any male who chooses to wear skirts and/or dresses is somehow causing irreversible damage to manhood, basically saying and believing that males have no business wearing skirts or dresses. Such people think that something as simple as a male wearing a skirt or a dress is somehow more damaging to manhood than issues like domestic violence or being a horrible father to children. So to preserve what society perceives every male should be, items like skirts and dresses are off-limits to males; and any male who chooses to wear skirts or dresses is seen as gay, which in turn damages manhood (according to some people). Which leads me to this next talking point...

Of Males, Skirts/Dresses, and Sexuality.

A male's manhood is often questioned by someone who sees a male wearing any sort of feminine clothing. To make the case for males, skirts were never exclusively feminine- and still aren't. However, what has become a staple in feminine fashion in modern times... is now somehow off-limits for males, even though males have worn skirts all throughout time. Is a female's womanhood questioned when she wears men's clothing? Females and feminine fashion are versatile in an array of respects. That's why I am more comfortable discussing feminine fashion here on StyleSpace. However, many males would argue that if females could get away with wearing masculine clothes, then males should be able to get away with wearing feminine clothes. As we all know- life is not perfect, and not as many people are as forgiving or as considerate. Wearing certain clothes does nothing to impact one's sexuality. It may mean you take on a certain opinion from society based on your sexuality, but it doesn't DEFINE your sexuality just because you wear certain clothes that seem exclusively for one gender.

Skirts/Dresses for Males: Fashion vs. Society

Whereas fashion has its own say, society will say that skirts should be worn by females and only females. So the notion of a male wearing a skirt is either grounds for gossip or ridicule (or both). The only acceptable skirts for males are kilts. Kilts are especially common among Scottish blokes (if I may use "blokes" to diversify my audience). Will there come a time where skirts will be just as acceptable for males as they are for females? And when it comes to skirts, I am not just talking about kilts or anything; but imagine even if males wanted to wear certain feminine skirts. Do you give the green light for a male to wear them if he so chooses?

Society will frown upon the male who chooses to wear feminine or feminine-inspired pieces. I think especially in American society, the perception is that males should all be strong and hunky. There's also the perception that any male who wears a skirt or a dress is perceived as being gay. While it is true that there are certain garments males don't wear, just because he wears a certain garment does not define or alter his sexuality or sexual preference. All it would take is for someone to really convince males that skirts can be just as wearable and as fashionable as any other male fashion pieces. About the only fashion designer who immediately comes to mind for me regarding male skirts is Jean Paul Gautier. What if a young boy wanted to wear a skirt? That's why I don't exclusively use "boy/girl" or "man/woman" in my posts- most of what I discuss pertains to males and females of various ages.

As with the appeal of wearing skirts, one is also subject to some of the less desirable elements of skirts. Among others is the dreaded upskirt fear and feeling covered. Does a male perhaps trade boxers for briefs when wearing a skirt? The most important element of fashion is comfort. If you aren't comfortable in your wardrobe, you won't feel and be confident in your wardrobe. So be sure to take this carefully in any of your outfits.

--- Males in Skirts: What Works? ---

It would be fair to say that any kind of skirt is fair game for males. Anything from denim skirts to any real feminine skirt would obviously be the kinds of skirts males would wear. You could even say that skirts ranging from floor-scraping lengths to mini skirt lengths are also fair game. After all- a skirt is a skirt.

What Is Acceptable for a Male's Skirt?

The most common skirts a male would wear would probably be denim skirts. An acceptable minimum length for a male skirt is just above the knees. I don't think there are too many males who would dare wear a mini skirt (any skirt mid-thigh in length or higher). There may those daring males who would wear a higher-than-normal skirt, but I think the greater majority would be better suited to more airy and comfortable skirts of decent length. Finally, I would not recommend any high-waist skirts for skirt-wearing males.

I think most males would probably want to wear denim skirts that are very loose. Some may even prefer some twill or linen skirts. A few fashionable ones would even wear a few skirts of soft materials like jersey. A concern area would be about wearing certain tight skirts. To put it modestly... (an embarrassing moment) may arise if a male wears certain bottoms of a very silky and soft material, and (it) especially happens if the fellow is sexually aroused wearing certain bottoms. I'm trying to keep this blog as professional and clean as possible- you probably know what I'm trying to talk about!

Skirt Alternatives.

If a male isn't confident about wearing a proper skirt, there are a few alternatives. First off are skorts. A skort has a skirt-like appearance thanks to certain panels or a certain proper skirt look. However, there are shorts underneath to keep the wearer covered. So you are essentially wearing a skirt with attached shorts or bloomers. Skorts are especially common for uniforms and active outfits.

Another alternative is culotte skirts. I am using "culotte skirts" to show that I am referring to culotte pants or skirts- not culotte underwear. Anyhow, culotte skirts are split skirts. This means they have a skirt-like appearance while still being primarily a proper skirt. They are just pants that have skirt-like legs.

If you go to the beach a lot, try a sarong/pareo. The terms vary depending on certain cultures, so that's why I use both sarong and pareo. These are cover-up skirts for the beach. In some nations, like some South Pacific nations, a sarong/pareo is a common bottom for males to wear.

This may hopefully get you males interested in skirts.

--- Should You (Males) Wear a Skirt? ---

All of you males should be able to wear almost whatever you want and feel most comfortable in. In no way do I think skirts are somehow off-limits for males if they so choose to wear them. The only ones who say males shouldn't wear skirts is society. Fashion (as well as art), however, rewards the individual not afraid to wear certain garments and outfits in a chic way. Even if at the expense of being heckled by society and peers, most important of all is the feeling of being comfortable and confident in what you wear. You should be happy regardless that you decided to go with something different from what society considers normal.

So if there are skirts you males would feel comfortable wearing, feel free to wear a skirt in the name of fashion. Express yourself any way you choose.

--- Should You (Males) Wear a Dress? (BONUS!) ---

I told you I'd take this topic a bit further- so should males wear dresses if they choose to? Dresses are absolutely feminine and almost exclusively feminine, but I don't think there are too many dresses that would do for most males what most dresses do for almost any female. A dress has to be every bit as wearable and as comfortable as a skirt. A dress is an all-in-one piece. The top portion and skirt portion both have to be stylish and comfy for a dress to be purely magical to wear. Why do you think females can confidently wear dresses and feel beautiful while in them? It is because they fit and flatter a female's body so much to where wearing them is second nature.

If a male wanted to try wearing dresses, I'd first stay away from any ultra-feminine dresses. A good start would probably be something like a shirtdress. Shirtdresses are essentially long shirts that flow and hang like a dress. They would be a great start. Some people even think that maxi dresses are great to wear for those who don't have bodacious bodies to wear any ultra-feminine dresses. I love maxi dresses, so maxi dresses can be the next step up for the male who wants to wear a dress as part of his wardrobe. If you're more confident and more daring, then surely go for the girly short dresses; or you may even try out a few feminine dresses- like those with deep backs, deep necklines, high slits, etc. Just go with dresses on levels you are most comfortable with.

Would I try wearing a dress since I'm bringing all of this up? No way! I don't have the body or the confidence to even dare try this out. Just because I am talking about males in skirts and dresses doesn't mean I am an advocate for or trying to encourage anything you see here.

There is at least one fellow out there who isn't shy about wearing skirts or dresses. Who is this fellow? Get to know him:

^ "Outfit of the Day: Clubbing!" (if you can't view Flash video)

Okay. Maybe not all males can get away with wearing skirts or dresses without looking the least bit awkward (unlike the person who you just saw in the video); but if you can wear a skirt, try going with wearing a dress if you can wear one. It could just be a regular dress (as opposed to a tight dress like in the above video).

--- Males in Skirts and Dresses: Final Thoughts ---

While I am not calling to action that males should wear skirts or dresses if they choose to, I do tend to believe in fashion freedom. What is mostly stopping certain males from being able to wear skirts or dresses are primarily social stereotypes and certain fashion double standards. For instance, it is okay for a female to wear masculine clothing and menswear pieces; but it is somehow unacceptable by society if a male wants to wear a skirt. People will take something as simple as clothes- one of a number of different essentials to keep us protected and warm- and turn it into some sort of intense debate. There would certainly be a number of females who would detest against the notion of a male wearing skirts and/or dresses.

Would I want to see any of my male friends wearing skirts? If they choose to and feel comfortable wearing them, who am I to stop them or tell them how they should dress and conduct themselves? Fashion is all about being yourself and expressing yourself through the means of fashion. If it means dressing in certain ways different from normal society, then so be it. Fashion rewards the ones who break boundaries and become their own inspirations rather than follow any norms set up by mainstream society.

Perhaps if more fashion designers were willing to take chances trying to make skirts and dresses chic for male, and if more males were open to try wearing skirts and dresses; then maybe males in skirts and/or dresses will be more commonplace and more acceptable. That day may likely never come any time soon. It doesn't make a male gay that he chooses to wear a skirt or a dress. These are just males who want to express themselves and be fashionable. Males probably wouldn't even mind wearing even the most feminine skirts and dresses. It is shameful how one article of clothing that males have worn for ages... is somehow off-limits or comical in today's modern times.

I want to stress again that I am not calling anything to action or not crusading for males to wear skirts or dresses. All I am doing- and all I try to do- is try to offer points and fashion discussions in my own way. Any males who may have enjoyed this blog post and want to wear skirts or dresses- if you want to wear skirts and/or dresses, then it's your call.

Ballet Flats

John B. Marine | 9:58 PM | | | 1 Comment so far
(UPDATED: September 4, 2017)

Ballet flats are cute and comfortable. Even if you never partake in ballet, you can still enjoy wearing these shoes performing to your own Swan Lake. These simple shoes are great for casual days or even as office-appropriate shoes. Their style makes them so wearable for day-to-day wear. Ballet flats are a style of shoe that remains lovely to wear regardless of their style. This blog post focuses on ballet flats.

Ballet Flats

Here is a pair of ballet flats to start this post off:

ballet flats
^ from: www.amazon.com - A pair of ballet flats are simple and stylish. These ballet flats are from L.A.M.B..

Who doesn't love something so simple and chic? Ballet flats provide this style of chic and more. The simple slip-on comfort and style of ballet flats make them comfortable and fun to wear. In fact, I would even say that ballet flats are a great shoe alternative to flip-flop/thong sandals. They can be every bit as inexpensive and stylish as flip-flop/thong sandals. Some ballet flats are foldable, making them every bit as functional to carry around comfortably. Not even a pair of flip-flop/thong sandals are that adaptable.

If you love heeled shoes but prefer something more practical, then certainly don't overlook ballet flats. They are just as girly and as cute as most of your other outfits. Any number of outfits can be worn with ballet flats. My only recommendation would be to not pair ballet flats with any night-out fashions. As mentioned before, some ballet flats are acceptable enough to be worn either as shoes in office environments (including school) or even as shoes to walk in when you're tired of going about in heels. The fact that ballet flats are so basic in design and in style make them every bit wearable and chic for various outfits. You could simply wear these to go with a basic T-shirt and jeans look. Most ballet flats are so basic in design that it doesn't take very much to make any almost outfit great with ballet flats.

Not all ballet flats are inexpensive. I once saw a pair of Christian Louboutin flats sell for over $500 US dollars (it's Louboutin- go fig)! Not all ballet flats . In fact, there are some very classy ballet flats from some quality designers. One of those high quality designers that make a fancy pair of ballet flats is Tory Burch. My blogging friend, Yi-chia of "Always Maylee," sometimes wear a pair of Tory Burch flats in some of her posts. Here is an example of one of those posts with a pair of Tory Burch flats:

"Blue and Green" (Always Maylee) « Tory Burch ballet flats

Just know that not all flats are inexpensive after looking at this featured post. Tory Burch and Kenneth Cole REACTION are two designer examples who make higher-end, more expensive ballet flats.

What to Wear With Ballet Flats?

Ballet flats are mostly wearable with casual outfits and some workplace outfits. Ballet flats can be wearable with school uniforms for you school students. One specific look I've enjoyed seeing flats with is wearing flats is when you pair ballet flats with a tunic and leggings. Daytime dresses and skirts are also fair game with ballet flats. There are a number of options for you both casual and dressy. The only thing I'd go against is perhaps going with certain night-out fashions.

Ballet Flats: Final Thoughts

Proudly wear your ballet flats. These are some shoes that are just slip-on stylish. They are practical and comfortable. The only reasons not to get ballet flats (to me) are either if you don't like them or if you don't think you feel hot wearing flat shoes. I am not saying for every female to get a pair of ballet flats, but these are not shoes to pass up. Their loveliness is vastly stated. What ballet flats may lack in sex appeal, they make up for with an overall comfortable and sleek pair of shoes.

It doesn't matter if they have a cute little bow at the front, some big details at the vamp, ankle straps, or whatever- ballet flats are every bit stylish and charming for a number of reasons. You don't even have to love ballet to love ballet flats. So let me say this again- proudly wear your ballet flats if you love wearing them!

Party Time!

John B. Marine | 9:59 PM | | | | | 1 Comment so far
(UPDATED: March 28, 2014)

It's party time! You know you have to step your style game up when ready for a party or a night out. "Party Time!" is one of my most popular posts on John's Blog Space. And here on StyleSpace, I lend my same discussion of party and night-out fashion here. Dressing for a night out or for any number of occasions means you'll need to get all dolled up and ready to party the night (or day- for day parties) away. This blog post is a look at fashions for parties or nights out. And yes- it's PARTY TIME!

No matter what posts may or may not be deleted, this post will officially be marked as the 50th post on "StyleSpace, by John B. Marine." The "Party Time!" on John's Blog Space was my official 500th blog entry.

BEFORE I BEGIN...

This blog post primarily concerns dressing up for a night out or for certain dressy occasions. There are many parties of many kinds, so I want to specify that this post mainly concerns most urban parties and occasions. About the target audience I am mostly discussing these fashions for are mostly people 18 or older.

LATEST UPDATE(S)/REVISION(S):

MAR 28 2014 - added some extra material, added extra source info for a used picture

--- Party Time! ---

The original "Party Time!" blog post from John's Blog Space had to do with fashion for a night out and for parties. The intent was mostly on semi-formal and formal parties. Dressing up for such occasions means enhancing your image as you attend and take part in lively functions.

Party Time for Males.

No guy wants to head to a party looking all frumpy and everything. A guy should be able to dress and act with some swagger. He should be the guy who has all the swagger and charm to whisk away any girl in the same vicinity- even if she's taken... and even if he is taken. So in most cases, a male should be handsomely-dressed and possess a good amount of charm as he's enjoying the festivities.

Party Time for Females.

A girl wants to be all dolled up when the hot nightlife beckons. She wants her hair to be styled beautifully. She wants her makeup touches to be picture perfect. And most of all- she wants her outfit (even if isn't a dress) to be every bit as charming as she is. At least for the girly-girl, she wants to look and feel like a princess on a night out. Some females even love any opportunity to glam it up and wear such stylish night-out fashions. Doesn't matter if it's a special party or a night at the nightclub- if it's an occasion where a girl can dress up and be all dolled up, it's time for her beauty to shine.

So when it is time for a party or some other festive function, it's best to look your best as well as feel your best!

--- Party Time: Dress to the Occasion ---

Certain occasions call for certain ways to dress up. Here's a look at a few different occasions:

Party Time! - Semi-Formal.

When I've looked at "Party Time!" on "John's Blog Space," I get a lot of people looking for the post regarding semi-formal fashion. A semi-formal occasion usually notes a party or function that requires you to dress appropriate; not exactly formal. It usually means that jeans are not off-limits. However, you do want to dress in a way suggestive of a party or some sort of formal function. So dress cleanly and stylishly.

Party Time! - Formal.

A formal-type party calls for some fancy suits and some fancy garments. The intent of this section mostly pertains to certain fancy parties like proms, wedding receptions, and things like that.

Party Time! - Dressy.

I classify dressy occasions as those that are not necessarily about any formal and proper occasions, but festive occasions and functions where most people dress up nicely. You know- dress to impress. I am mostly talking about certain parties and going to various nightclubs and lounges. An example of a dressy party would be a New Year's Eve party, for example.

Now let's look at the individual pieces that make up most semi-formal and formal night/party outfits.

--- Dressing Up For Nights Out ---

Now on to the main portions of this blog post. Here is a look at some of the many different fashion pieces for the night-out person...

Party Dresses.

party dress
^ from: www.amazon.com - Glam it up with a party dress!

juniors party dress
^ from: shop.nordstrom.com - a pretty pink party dress for Juniors from As U Wish.

The party dress is a real telltale sign of a girl ready to enjoy a night out at a party or a club. Party dresses are very feminine and charming. Most party dresses are silky to the touch and may even have shiny or sparkly elements. The ultimate of style of a party dress relates in feeling like a glamourous princess. Party dresses allow you to feel that extra bit girly and chic. These are dresses made for you to look and feel charming as you dance the night away. If you single ladies are lucky, you may even win the attention of a handsome single fellow as you're dancing away and being free. ;) I always fancy a dressy pair of pumps or sandals to go with a party dress. However, some fashionable ladies out there dare try wearing ankle boots. Some even dare wear a tough pair of lace-up ankle boots. And once, I've heard of some wearing combat boots with party dresses. But to me- pumps, sandals, or ankle boots (not any lace-up ones) are best.

Cocktail Dresses.

cocktail dress
^ from: www.amazon.com - A cocktail dress is girly, chic, and hot.

Usually more popular during colder weather, cocktail dresses are often named for the cocktail drinks they represent or are inspired by. I usually characterize cocktail dresses as fun and girly dresses that are either short or mid-length that flow beautifully. Such dresses have a beautiful shape to them. All you need are a lovely set of pumps or sandals, and you're set. Or if you're the tougher type, try a foxy pair of booties to compliment a cocktail dress.

Party/Evening Skirts.

evening skirt
^ from: www.nordstrom.com - Don't fancy a dress for a night out? Try a dressy skirt instead.

party skirt
^ from: www.amazon.com - This is a frilly taffeta skirt for party/evening wear.

You may consider an elegant skirt to wear with a stylish top if you don't fancy a dress. You have a few more options with a dressy skirt as you can find a great dressy top to compliment the skirt. A dressy skirt usually is made of the same silky or soft materials as party dresses.

Party/Evening Pants.

evening pants
^ from: www.neimanmarcus.com - You can still feel every bit dressy wearing a lovely pair of dressy pants.

For those not comfortable with skirts or dresses, or for those who are more comfortable wearing pants for nights out and for parties, there are a number of pants and pant suits meant to be every bit as charming for a night out as any skirt or dress. There is no shame wearing a pair of pants to compliment any sort of dressy outfit. I would fancy a chic sleeveless blouse to go with a pair of dressy pants. That is, unless it's cold outside.

Party/Evening Shorts.

evening shorts sequin
^ from: www.shopbop.com - Some shorts are very chic to wear for a night out or for certain occasions. These sequin shorts from Diane Von Furstenberg are an example of evening-type shorts.

Who said shorts were only for casual wear and only for the daytime? Some shorts are so chic and dressy that they can be worn for a night out. Don't be under the presumption that shorts are not worth wearing for a party or (most) dressy occasions.

Party/Evening Rompers/Playsuits and Jumpsuits.

One-piece shorts and one-piece pants make great alternatives to dresses. In addition, the rompers/playsuits of today have proven to be VERY chic. Such rompers/playsuits can be every bit as flirty and hot as any traditional short dress. Don't listen to anybody who says that rompers/playsuits are not meant to wear for a night out. Some of them are more than dressy enough for a night out as any dress.

evening romper playsuit
^ from: www.shopbop.com - Not all rompers/playsuits are meant for daytime only. Some, like this sexy "Buckets of Rain" romper/playsuit from findersKEEPERS, are more than adequate for a night out or a party than for daytime wear.

Don't let anyone tell you that rompers/playsuits are ONLY for daytime wear and only with casual shoes. Some rompers are great exceptions, especially those that are elegant and chic in design. Some celebrities have worn these along with some dressy pumps, some chic sandals, or even a sexy pair of high-heel booties. So don't be afraid to wear a romper for a night out. Especially the ones that look like very short dresses can be the hottest ones to wear. One-shoulder and one-sleeve rompers can certainly be hot to wear.

evening jumpsuit
^ from: www.nordstrom.com - A jumpsuit (or a palazzo jumpsuit in this case) is a great dress alternative.

A jumpsuit can be equally hot to wear for a night out. Palazzo jumpsuits can be a great pants alternative to a maxi dress, but skinny and normal width jumpsuits can be equally charming and flattering. I would recommend palazzo jumpsuits if we're talking formal or dressy occasions. They can be very elegant to wear.

Party/Evening Denim.

dressy denim
^ from: www.shopbop.com - Some jeans are classy enough to wear to even semi-formal occasions- like these MiH Marrakesh kick flare jeans.

If someone says you can't wear denim for a night out, then unless it's for a formal occasion, they're crazy! As long as the jeans aren't extremely ripped up and torn, or if they are acid-washed, or anything like that; classy denim bottoms can be more than acceptable to wear to certain upscale occasions.

Club Shirts (Men).

button-down shirt men
^ from: www.macys.com - a button-down shirt like the one above is great to dress down during the day and dress up for the night.

The guy who wants to look good going out to the club or a lounge obviously needs to wear a shirt as cool as he is. One such option would be a good nightclub shirt; or at least, a shirt stylish enough to wear to a nightclub or lounge.

Everyone can use fun and stylish fashions for nights out and for all sorts of parties and other occasions. So can us guys. And one way to look great for a night out at the club or at a lounge is to wear a club shirt.

These are among many different examples of how males and females for parties and other dressy occasions.

--- Party Time Around the Internet ---

Even though I've made mention to male fashion, most of what I'm discussing here will primarily involve feminine fashion. So here are a few blog posts of some stylish and sophisticated party outfits:

new look: "Pair of disco shoes & one warm evening" (Glam and Fab Chameleon) « a chic evening dress with peep-toe shoes.
new look: "Satin Night" (Glam and Fab Chameleon) « a stylish evening dress with strappy sandals.
Pink + Red (Valentine's Inspiration) - (Style 4 Curves) « a Valentine's Day outfit with a lovely party dress and some dressy pumps.
Roman Luxe x Revolve Party (KARLA'S CLOSET) « long dress with dressy sandals.
2 Birthday Dresses! Polka-dotted and High-low Dresses! (Principessa Gabriella) « two outfits, including a charming high-low/mullet dress worn for a birthday party.

Those are are many links as I could provide to help prove the point.

--- Party Time: Final Thoughts ---

When it comes time to party or dress up for festive occasions, it's best to look your best. Look your best when you leave the house all the time wherever you go, but you have to step your style game up with such occasions. Be both confident and charming in your personality and in your fashion. Who wants to be at a festive occasion feeling poor and lifeless and not confident? When it's party time, build up your personality and make yourself presentable.

If you're about to attend or will attend some sort of festive occasion any time soon, have fun and be safe!

Boleros and Shrugs

John B. Marine | 7:51 PM | | | 1 Comment so far
When it's too cool outside to go bare arms, but not cold to reach for a jacket; a bolero or a shrug will keep you warm. They can either be short-sleeve or long-sleeve garments meant to keep you warm and even add some style. They offer some add-on style to spice up an outfit. No matter what you think about boleros and shrugs, I'm here to chat about them in this blog post.

PLEASE feel free to connect with StyleSpace. If you like my blog here, make sure to add your lovely self to the collection of Followers of this blog. Subscribe via FeedBurner to keep up with my latest posts as they are created. Get social with me if you like your experience here!

--- Boleros and Shrugs ---

Boleros and shrugs are two kinds of jackets for those who don't want to wear a proper jacket. They are merely add-ons to one's outfit to offer a certain extra style. Both boleros and shrugs are mostly of cropped lengths. So while they may be cropped jackets, they are likely not recommended for really cold days or being in really cold places.

Boleros.

Let's look at a bolero jacket:

bolero jacket
^ from: www.amazon.com - A bolero jacket is simple to wear and can add a little extra style to your outfit.

A bolero is simply a jacket you just throw on and wear. Most boleros usually are not fastened together and are mostly worn to spice up any certain outfit. There are boleros worn with casual and formal outfits alike. A casual bolero could be just a simple denim bolero meant to go with a jeans look or even to pair with a lovely casual dress. A formal bolero compliments some gorgeous formal dress. Boleros are mostly suited towards keeping you warm without needing a full jacket. While most boleros are short-sleeved, some boleros have elbow-length sleeves or even long sleeves.

Shrugs.

These are examples of shrugs:

tie-front shrug
^ from: www.johnlewis.com - A tie-front shrug.

tie-front shrug with top and jeans
^ from: eBay, by way of inkfrog.com - A shrug adds a little extra flavor to an otherwise basic outfit.

Unlike boleros, shrugs can be fastened together to compliment an outfit. As layering became popular in about the mid-2000s, many females have enjoyed layering on a shrug with their outfits. The most common shrugs are tie-front sweater shrugs. A shrug can be short-sleeve or long-sleeve. I would see a lot of tie-front shrugs to compliment a certain top someone is wearing. If you're more daring, as long as the shrug isn't sheer, some shrugs could be worn alone as midriff-baring tops. I would probably even go as far as to say that (especially) a tie-front shrug would be a nice top to wear for dancing or belly dancing.

Whatever the case, a bolero or a shrug will do you well if you're looking for something comfy to throw on when it's marginally cool outside.

--- Boleros and Shrugs Online ---

Get your share of online inspiration to wear boleros and/or shrugs by having a look at these links. I am sorry I could really find one relevant blog reference:

"new look: Green Green Grass" (Glam and Fab Chameleon) « green bolero with a green dress
"Lots of Fashion!" (Principessa Gabriella) « multiple outfits with shrugs
bolero looks on Lookbook
shrug looks on Lookbook
bolero looks on Chictopia
shrug looks on Chictopia

Those are only a few ways to wear boleros and shrugs.

--- Boleros and Shrugs: Final Thoughts ---

By all means, proudly wear boleros and shrugs. They provide just that extra bit of style to jazz up any sort of look. These are simple jackets to wear that provide some extra style. They can compliment anything ranging from a casual outfit to certain formal dresses. I actually used to be against boleros and shrugs at one point (especially shrugs), but I think both are stylish pieces to compliment outfits. So I say it again- wear your boleros and/or shrugs proudly!

Comfort Zone

John B. Marine | 11:51 AM | | | 1 Comment so far
Everyone has a comfort zone with everything. Some people who try out new trends are often a bit skeptical because some may be outside of one's own norm. It is always nice to try new things every now and then. But with fashion, it is not always as easy as simply wear and go. Fashion does reward people who take risks wearing certain clothes and working certain trends. Always remember that confidence is key in any look or style. What good is it for you to look and feel your best when you are not in your comfort zone? Do not be pressured into wearing or dressing something if you aren't totally comfortable and confident. If you feel you need to change up some things about yourself, then make the needed changes- whether it's losing weight, learning how to walk in heels, or anything like that.

It is perfectly fine to go with things outside of your comfort zone, but remember to be confident in what you wear and how you look. Clothes don't make you better- confidence does. So even if you wear something outside of your comfort zone or what you normally wear, always remember to be confident in what you wear and how you wear it.

Oxfords and Brogues

John B. Marine | 9:42 PM | | | Be the first to comment!
(UPDATED: May 27, 2023)

Oxford shoes and brogues offer boyish style for feminine feet. It is one of the most classic menswear touches that a fashionista can very much love. Some oxford shoes and brogues can even be pretty cute to wear (I must admit). While I am not really into lace-up chic shoes for females, I know of you females out there are. I must once again appeal to the fashionistas out there with another quality blog post of mine. I guess if you're bored with slip-on flats and pumps, perhaps some of the best alternatives would be oxfords or brogues. It is important I stress we're talking oxford shoes; not oxford shirts. This is to avoid confusion and to specify what exactly I am discussing here.

NOTE: Most of the information in this blog post was from the "John's Blog Space" entry of the same name.

LATEST UPDATE(S)/REVISION(S):

MAY 27 2023 - simple edits

Oxford Shoes and Brogues at a Glance

Why care about these shoes? I guess from certain perspectives, ballet flats must be boring. From another perspective, oxford shoes (especially brogues) offer and add to the touch of "boy tough, girl cute." Think of the females who love the boyfriend fashion look and go with a pair of boyish brogues rather than some chic pumps or sandals. For example, rather than some sandals or flats with mid-calf length boyfriend jeans, a female goes with a pair of oxfords or brogues instead. As I mentioned previously, though... I'm not really into chic lace-up shoes or sandals. I just don't like them all that much.

Here are a few varieties of oxford shoes and brogues...

Brogues.

brogues women
^ from: Amazon - Brogues can be thought of as a chic lace-up alternative to ballet flats or sneakers.

As you know in fashion, being different and distinctive goes a long way. These chic lace-ups can somewhat be thought of as a cross between pumps and oxfords. Brogues are essentially oxfords, but these have become incredibly popular as of late. Perhaps it is their boyish charm that makes brogues chic for females. Such shoes could be worn with anything ranging from boyfriend jeans to a stylish pair of pants. Be boyish with brogues. Be classy with brogues. It's all up to you and how you want to dress these up or down.

Oxford Pumps.

oxford pumps
^ from: www.shoes.com - Oxford pumps (which I've blogged about before) are all about lace-up chic while being exclusively feminine.

Prefer exclusively feminine oxfords? Go with oxford pumps! These provide lace-up style along with a nicely-defined heel. These oxford pumps can range from comfortable wedges to a deceptive pair of stiletto heels. To show the appeal of brogues, even Taylor Swift traded cowboy boots for a pair of oxford pumps to go with her dresses a few times. Such shoes can be worn with almost any garment. Go classy and pair some oxford pumps with tall socks or stockings/tights.

Want to read my past blog post about oxford pumps? If so, then visit "Oxford Pumps" on John's Blog Space!

Oxford Sandals.

oxford sandals
^ from: thisnext.com - Prefer open-air comfort with your oxfords? Your best bet is with oxford sandals.

Jeffrey Campbell oxford sandals
^ from: theladiesaffair.wordpress.com - If you want some flat sandals that are a little different from thong sandals or gladiator sandals, try these Jeffrey Campbell oxford sandals.

The open-air comfort of sandals paired with the chic appeal of oxfords make oxford sandals just as fun as any average oxfords. All you have to do is lace them up and enjoy the style of oxfords while allowing your feet a chance to breathe and enjoy the air as you walk.

So it's all about lace-up chic with a chic pair of shoes. It isn't about wearing sneakers, it isn't about going with some aggressive combat boots, but rather wearing a classy pair of lace-up shoes that can be just as chic as any pumps or sandals.

Oxfords/Broques Around the Blogosphere

Time to get your online inspiration. These are ladies who are sporting some oxfords or brogues. They may also include oxford pumps.

"Sunny Sweater" on Aibina's Blog « shiny oxford shoes.

If I find some more posts, I will feature them in future edits. Contact me on Facebook or via E-Mail if you have a blog post befitting of being here. The key requirement for this post: a picture of you wearing oxford shoes or brogues. But for now, these will do.

Oxfords and Brogues: Final Thoughts

Feminine fashion taking masculine cues is nothing new. Oxfords and brogues have shown to be wearable even for casual outfits. And just like wearing a blazer, one can play up her style by wearing a pair of oxfords or brogues. So proudly wear your oxford shoes and brogues if you love them!

Óscar de la Renta

John B. Marine | 10:07 AM | | | 2 Comments so far
(UPDATED: October 20, 2014)

"My role as a designer is to make a woman feel her very best."

-Oscar de la Renta

...and that is EXACTLY what one Óscar Aristides de la Renta Fiallo and his designs do for women. This quote came from an interview he once did with Net-a-Porter. Oscar de la Renta was one of the first fashion icons I've grown to love since really getting into fashion. The (born on July 22, 1932)-year old native of the Dominican Republic has designed some of the most amazing fashions for women. The dresses that he has designed are angelic and beautiful. I think Oscar de la Renta's style is predicated on beautiful, angelic, and immensely feminine styles. Besides feminine fashion, he has also created fine fashions for men. I don't know as much about him for his masculine fashions as I do his feminine fashions, unfortunately. His fashions have been featured at many shows and even Carrie's wedding dress in the "Sex and the City Movie." Oscar de la Renta is one of the premier designers in the world. This fellow below is Oscar de la Renta himself:

Oscar de la Renta
^ from: www.salvatoreminardi.com - Oscar de la Renta is one of the most well-respected fashion designers in the world.

This was a post from "John's Blog Space" modified for "StyleSpace." Most of what you see here is mostly unchanged from the previous post on JBS.

LATEST UPDATE(S)/REVISION(S):

OCT 20 2014 - added news bit

Oscar de la Renta has died at the age of 82 on October 20, 2014 battling cancer since 2006.

--- Oscar de la Renta in Pictures ---

I've looked around online for pictures of some of Oscar de la Renta's designs. This section features some of his work. Here are some quotes of his I want you to remember when looking at these upcoming images. These are all based on the Net-a-Porter video I got these quotes from (which you can see later in this blog post):

Oscar de la Renta Quotes.

Here are a few quotes I grabbed from the video:

"The 21st Century is the century of the woman."

"My role as a designer is to make a woman feel her very best."

"What is important to a woman is her own sense of individuality."

"There are no frontiers a woman can't surmount."
-Oscar de la Renta, in an interview with Net-a-Porter.

I don't see how any femme can NOT look and feel her best after you see some of these designs. (SPECIAL REQUEST: Let me know if I am unable to use any of the following images in my post. Please contact me via E-mail, and I will replace any image that I am unable to use. I will try to find replacement images to better educate my audience.):

Oscar de la Renta wedding dress
^ from: www.recycledbride.com - a silk organza wedding dress from Oscar de la Renta with many dramatic ruffles and frills.

On your wedding day (as a bride), you are a goddess to the one you're about to marry. Classic loveliness is guaranteed with a wedding dress this lovely from Oscar de la Renta. This is a very vintage-style dress.

Oscar de la Renta vintage dress
^ from: xiziluo.wordpress.com - Here is a beautiful vintage-type dress.

If I were a lady, I'd SO want to twirl in this lovely dress. It just seems to look and feel every bit of elegant in its design and style.

Oscar de la Renta floral dress
^ from: www.neimanmarcus.com - A cute dress from a pre-Fall 2010 Ready-to-Wear collection.

This dress would be beautiful to wear even on a casual day. The shape of the dress and its design suggests this can be fun for casual or [at least] semi-formal occasions. It still has a gracious sense of elegance regardless of whatever occasions or situations this dress is worn.

Oscar de la Renta men
^ from: www.overstock.com - This blazer for men is an example of some of Oscar de la Renta's male fashion offerings.

Remember the quote that started out this blog post? Well, I got that quote from this video below. Get some insight as to what Oscar de la Renta brings to style:

This man is golden.

From instyle.com, I found a photo gallery featuring many more of outfits Oscar de la Renta designed for certain celebrities. Whom have worn Oscar de la Renta? Find out by browsing this gallery on instyle.com!

--- What I Would Tell Oscar de la Renta (if he were to read this) ---

Oscar de la Renta, you have the Midas touch with fashion. Your fashion creations are golden. You are sensational to me. Keep up the great work, and thanks for being an inspiration and a hero to me in regards to fashion.

Would I Want to Meet Oscar de la Renta?

I would love to. He is a wonderful person and one of my all-time favorite designers. Absolutely.
